Show Nearly 1,000 Men And Boys Here For Conference Responsibility of Good Leadership Stressed By L. D. S. Church Leaders By MABEL JARVIS Nearly 1000 men and boys of the seven stakes comprising the Virgin river region of the L. D. S. church, assembled in St. George Sunday for the two sessions of the Regional Reg-ional Conference, such as were held throughout the church tliat day in the various regions, missions mis-sions and areas. Many who attended at-tended the General Conference the previous week in Salt Lake City were thus permitted to carry 'the general messages of the church authorities to the many priesthood quorums. ' Official visitors to the local conference were Albert E. Bowen of the Council of Twelve Apostles and John H. Taylor, president of the general quorum of seventy. Pres. Harold S. Snow of the St. George stake presidency conducted con-ducted the meeting under the direction di-rection of these visitors, and gave the address of welcome to the hundreds who thronged the historic his-toric Tabernacle at the forenoon session, relating some of the history his-tory of pioneering in Utah's Dixie. Anthorties' Message The message of the authorities in both the forenoon and afternoon after-noon sessions and at the special session at noon for stake presidents presi-dents and bishops was the responsibility re-sponsibility of leadership in the LD.S. church, along with a general gen-eral report of the meetings of the recent conference. Speakers said the success of every phase of the church work depends on good leadership and those called to responsible re-sponsible positions should be leaders lead-ers in spirit and truth. The progress prog-ress of the church depends on the stimulus given by the leaders. Not who we are but how well we do our task is the measure to be considered in leaders both young and old. Spiritual benefits (Continued on page eight) Regional Conference (Continued from first page) are the sole gain to be desired as compensation for filling calls of responsibility in the Father's Kingdom, and in sessions of sincere sin-cere religious worship and these are far greater than any material gains. These were among points stressed. In the process of his address, Apostle Bowen interrogated the Aaronic priesthood representatives as to their understanding of their callings and responsibilities, boys from different stakes responding. They were told the specific duties of their respective callings. President Taylor devoted his remarks re-marks to the missionary work being be-ing done in the church under the present military set-up of the world and the greater responsibility responsi-bility of those who are at home in upholding the principles of the church and in living their religion and sustaining with faith and hope those who are also filling missions on the battle fronts as ambassadors ambassa-dors of freedom and humanitarian ideals. Jos. W. McAllister conducted the congregational singing at the various sessions with Mae A. Pace and Paul Thompson accompanists. Numbers included favorite hymns of the L. D. S. church. Other numbers, num-bers, including, "I Would Be True" were sung by the Dixie male quartet, quar-tet, directed by Mrs. Pace and including in-cluding Vernon Worthen, Ray Whipple, Leland Lamoreaux and Marion Bowler, and a vocal solo, "The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation", by Leland Lamoreaux; and "This Is My Task", by Marion Bowler. Special stress was given the work of the visiting ward teach ers, Apostle Bowen offering the suggestion that no man is too old to serve as a visiting teacher i his ward if called on by the bishop to serve in this capacity no matter what other position he may hold in the church; and no man holds such high position but he can benfit by gracious recep. tion of the ward teachers in his home and discussion with them of the message they bring. Souls of men, and not percentages of visits are the greatest concern of the church, and this program can accomplish ac-complish much with the cooperation cooper-ation of families in the ward. President Taylor spoke during the afternoon session of the dang ers of unwholesome propaganda within the home circle and in the community, suggesting that in per-ilous per-ilous times as those of the present day more love, affection, tolerance, toler-ance, understanding and unity of purpose is necessary with parents and children, and the responsibility responsi-bility of both parents and children is great in preserving the unity of families which is the consumation of righteous purposes in the preparation prep-aration for ultimate savlation. |
