Barton, champion Red Cross knitter knit-ter marked off his 76th birthday anniversary, and checked off his 100th sweater for the U. S. service men. His is rather a unique story. His mother died when he was aged 'six. At seven he learned to knit and soon was" making stockings stock-ings for the family and later for others. During World War One, he lived in Nevada and between times from regular duties at home he made 44 sweaters, and 102 pairs of socks for the .American Red Cross, and 200 pairs of socks for the Belgian children, along with numerous sweaters and scarfs He also did knitting for friends and neighbors. Since July 1942 he has completed com-pleted 100 sweaters and 29 pairs of socks for the men in service. He has also made five sweaters for his grandchildren while visiting visit-ing them recently. He calls for yarn by the box rather than by the skein. According to Mr. Barton, if not disturbed, he can complete a stweater in two days providing his eyes are good and,v everything goes right. He likes a change of color in yarns now and then, and prefers not to knit ' long stockings. stock-ings. The Washington County Chapter of the American Red Cross appreciates h i s generous contribution to their program. |
