Show All Phases of Red Cross Work Described By Mrs. Reed Blake By MRS. REED BLAKE Last week a portion of the Red Cross program in National Defense De-fense was presented to readers of the News. A continuation of this program is presented below in order that Washington county citizens cit-izens may have a better understanding under-standing of the work which is carried car-ried on by the organization. Red Cross furnishes blood plasms from voluntary donors to Army and Navy hospitals. Also furnishes thousands of comfort articles and toilet kits. Will produce pro-duce and give to Army this year 40 million surgical dressings. Red Cross instructors are teaching teach-ing great numbers of Army personnel per-sonnel in first aid, swimming, and water safety, as a part of the military mili-tary training. They gave 400,000 pieces of equipment needed in recreation programs. Red Cross headquarters buildings build-ings are being built on 62 Army posts to provide classrooms and offices. (We are the only agency allowed on posts.) Will equip, furnish, staff, and operate 65 recreation buildings for convalescents at Army and Navy hospitals. On the Home Front Training 100,000 nurses aides who will do volunteer work in hospitals hos-pitals which are understaffed because be-cause nurses have been called to Army service. Will train unlimited number of women in home nursing so that they can care intelligently for illness in the home. Will train several millions of home defense volunteers in a first aid course especially designed to meet war-time condtions. First aid detachments are getting get-ting established in stores, offices, mills and factories, for the purpose pur-pose of training volunteers in handling mass casualties which might result from sabotage, natural nat-ural disaster, or military emergency. emerg-ency. Red Cross disaster units in every county are preparing to give food, clothing, medical aid, shelter, and other necessities in time of disaster. dis-aster. The Red Cross is obliged by law to perform this service both in time of peace and in time of war. Highway first aid stations are being increased to meet the needs which might result from evacuation evacua-tion of large areas, or from other mass movements of population resulting re-sulting from war-time conditions. The services are provided out of the membership dollar. Remember that the administrative cost of Red Cross work is only 3 per cent, the lowest of any social agency in the country.
