Show Hyrum Leany Dies Here Tuesday; Services Held Sunday, May 6th Funeral services for Hyrum Leany, 92, will be held in the St. George stake tabernacle, Sunday, May 6, at 5:30 p. m. He died at his home in St. George Tuesday, May 1, of ailments incident to age, after one week's illness. Born in Parowan, Utah, Aug. 26, 1852, he was a son of William and Elizabeth Scearce Leany. He was the second white child born j in this pioneer Mormon settle- j ment. j The family moved to Harris-1 burg in 1861, when he was nine years of age. He had little opportunity oppor-tunity for schooling. As a young man he worked at Silver Reef during the boom years of that mining camp, serving at one time as deputy marshall in helping to convey a group of strikers to Beaver for trial. In his history are many incidents of interest concerning Silver Reef. On May 15, 1889, he married Mary M. Woodbury of St. George in the St. George Temple. They made their home in Harrisburg where he followed farming and cattle raising. He was also active in civic and religious affairs. For (Continued on page eight) Hyrum Leany Death 'Continued from first page) 18 years he was counselor in the bishopric of Leeds ward of which Harrisburg was a branch. He was also Sunday school superintendent and a member of the district school board for many years. The Leanys moved to St. George in 1920 to give their children better education opportunities and Mr. and Mrs. Leany have since spent much of their time at temple work. They have also kept up a large garden, Mr. Leany working actively until mid-April. i Surviving besides Mrs. Lenny are one daughter and seven sons. They are Mrs. W. C. Cox, N. II. Leany, Vivian R. Leany, Rodney W. Leany, all of St. George; Wil-ford Wil-ford Leany, Hurricane; Francis S. Leany, Milford; George Loany, Nephi; Culbert Leany, Washington, Washing-ton, D. C. ; 36 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Ten grandsons arc in military service. |
