Show Field Day Is Well Attended By Men From Here Stockmen, Farmers and Soil Conservation Men Agree On Great Value Of Work Field Day at the Deseret Range Branch station, fifty miles west of Milford, presented an unusual program pro-gram and picture to the group that gathered there on September 3 and 4 to study range control and management as demonstrated Washington county was well represented re-presented with thirteen being present. pre-sent. According to those who attended attend-ed the projects viewed were as follows: 1. Range recovery and rehabilitation rehabili-tation stimulated by proper management. man-agement. 2. Comparative vigor of perennial peren-nial native range plants on heavily grazed ranges as compared to those on the properly utilized ranges. 3. Relation of watering places to forage production and range utilization. 4. Replacement of better and more palatable native forage plants by less valuable weedy species. 5. The effect of drought on range recovery. A large number of plots of land have been fenced off to protect the areas from overgrazing. In these plots the more desirable forage for-age plants such as white sage, black sage, shadscale, rice grass, and other plants have again made excellent growth under protection and have crowded out the weeds such as the Russian thistle. Big Improvement The most encouraging thing observed ob-served by the stockmen was the fact that the range may be brought back by proper grazing. Of two flockn of sheep epch approximately ap-proximately 2500 each in number, the flock which was grazed inside the fenced area where the range was properly managed, returned $1200 more to the owner than that grazed on the open range. The yield in wool was one and one-third pounds more per head, showing that improved ranges will mean dollars and cents to the live stock producer. Enthusiastic praise for the work was given by all who attended. Dr. E. C. Carroll, dean of Agriculture Agri-culture at U. S. A. C. declared that the "Live stock of Utah is Utah's main agricultural industry. Range management will determine the extent of this industry". Those who attended from this section included Anthony Atkin, Benjamine Swapp, Wayne Gardner Gard-ner Erastus Gardner, Anson B. Call, Darell Bentley, Rex Frei, Bruce Snow, D. Elden Beck, P. D. Spilsbury, Floyd Atkin, Earl Hafen, and Irvin McArthur. |
