Show 'Tis the Head, Not Heart, That Wags the Tongue In recognition of some service Chief Washakie of the Shoshone Indians had rendered, General Grant sent him a beautiful silver-mounted silver-mounted saddle. It was presented present-ed with troops drawn up and a grandiloquent speech by the commanding com-manding officer. When Washakie was asked if he wished to reply, he shook his head negatively. "What!" shouted the colonel, "after all you heard you have nothing to say?" The Indian answered: "White man feels with his head; his head has tongue. Indian feels with his heart; heart no tongue." |
