Show i- Y ' ? V - 4 CHRISTIAN TSCHANZ First Birthday Party Given Tschanz, 79, Here Last Monday Christian (Chris) Tschanz celebrated cele-brated his 79 birthday anniversary last Monday. To celebrate a 79 birthday anniversady is an event in itself, but when it is the first one that was celebrated with a birthday party, it then becomes a greater event. Mr. Tschanz was thus honored at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Brooks where approximately 60 friends called to wish him "many happy returns of the day". Among those who honored him were Mayor and Mrs. Albert E. Miller, Glenn E. Snow, president of the college; W. B. Mathis, president presi-dent Of the bank; H. S. Snow, president of the Temple and many other representative citizens. Christy's early boyhood days were spent with his parents, Christian and Elizabeth'' Kro.bs Tschanz on his grandfather's farm in Wichach, Canton Beb, Switzer-(Continued Switzer-(Continued on page seven) Chris Tschanz Honored (Continued from first page) land, where he was born November Novem-ber 28, 1859. Here he went to school some, took two years of army drill and was baptized into the Mormon church in August, 1870. In company with the Schmutz family, in charge of John C. Naegle on the Good Ship Nevada, the family migrated to America, arriving in Salt Lake City in July of 1874. They were immediately called by Brigham Young to 'St. George, arriving at the home of Henry Eyring, (now Bishop Mc-Arthur's) Mc-Arthur's) on July 17, 1874. Several days later they located at Price bench where during the next year they worked at farming and herding herd-ing cows. On arriving back to St. George the family settled on the Swiss Block, where they lived for four years. During their stay here the father died. Christy went to school in the second ward school house under Barbara Mathis and Annie Mc-Quarrie, Mc-Quarrie, soon securing work from Pres. Erastus Snow in the garden and on the farm. Worked On Temple The following several years Chris worked on the Temple before be-fore it was completed. He worked in the builders union under Miles P. Romney. peeling bark on Pine Valley mountain, building a dam in the Virgin at Mosquite. on the Naegle home at Toquorville and other odd jobs. Since March 1. 18S1. he has been employed at the St. George Temple now in his 58 year. While there he has worked under Pres. John D. T. McAllister. Tros. D. H. Cannon. Pres. Thomas P. Cot I am, Pres. Edward H. Snow, Pres. George F. Whitehead and at present pre-sent under Pres. Harold S. Snow. He quite well remembers Pros. Brigham Young and Pres. Wilford Woodruff when they worked in the Temple. Mr. Tschanz says the.-c men were all his friend.- and treated him well. Although he has no immediate im-mediate relatives, he has many good friends. During the later years of his life he has assisted by donations in the construction of many beautiful : buildings and equipped the hiolagi-i hiolagi-i ral laboratory of the Dixie cr.llece. He says that he feels honored with a' visit of his friend- and 'hopes to enjoy their association I much more in the future. |
