Show Community Beautification Needed An eight page folder entitled "Our Churches Shall Be Beautiful" has been issued by the L.D.S. Improvement and Beautification committee. In this, pictures are published showing how some of the church buildings looked before being remodeled and what was accomplished by the improvement im-provement program. On the first page appears this paragraph, "The appearance ap-pearance of Church and Community buildings and homes mirrors the pride and industry of a people. We urge that Latter-Day-Saints become conscious of the need for improvement im-provement and beautification to properly reflect to the observer ob-server the ideals and high standards of our people. Such a program will stimulate industry and independence and improve the appearance and utility of Church edificies and individual homes. Every Stake President and every Bishop should be responsible for the activity of each officer and member in this program." We believe that this program by the Church is a very worthy one and one that will bring far reaching results. On a recent trip north we contacted many people who told us that they had heard so much about St. George that they were disappointed when they saw it. They pointed out that in the old days it was considered the garden spot of Utah, but in their estimation the community had not kept step with the advancement made throughout the rest of the state in beautification and that now it was a disappointment disappoint-ment to them. One of the state leaders told us that he wouldn't want to be quoted, but in his estimation there were more flies per square inch in St. George than in any other community in the state. This man travels throughout Utah and should know what he is talking about. In making the comment we felt that he was sincere and meant it only as a spur to help stir action and not just as a derogatory statement. From the comments of those we talked with, we came to the conclusion that either St. George had been over esi-mated esi-mated in the past, or this community has slipped backward back-ward while the other sections were advancing in beautification. beautifi-cation. At any rate there can be only one answer and that is that a determined effort should be made to regain the reputation of the past and be sure that it is a deserved one this time. |
