REPORTS JULY'S ACTIVITIES In view of the wide-spread interest in-terest in the cattle purchasing and meat canning program of the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, makes the following fol-lowing statement of the -grogram to date: A report made to the State Advisory Board on Public Welfare Wel-fare and Emergency Relief covering cov-ering the activities of the Cattle Cat-tle Processing Program showed that from July 2nd to August 15 the 19,152 beeves and 2,196 calves had been taken from the depleted ranges of Utah for processing pro-cessing by the Utah Emergency Relief Administration. From thir, number of cattle 1,693,640 pounds of beef were canned in the four canning plants being operated under the Relief Administration. Ad-ministration. This meat will be distributed later to people on the relief rolls of . every county in Utah. It is said to be a high-class high-class product, and every step in the processing has been thoroughly thor-oughly safe-guarded by inspection inspec-tion either by men from the U. S. Department of Agri-Bureau Agri-Bureau of Animal Industry of culture or by inspectors from the Utah State Department of Agriculture. These cattle had been turned over to the Relief Administration after purchase by representatives of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration. Virtually the entire capacity of all suitable slaughtering houses in the state has been used in expediting this program, pro-gram, and, except for key positions, posi-tions, all employment under the program has been given to persons per-sons on relief rolls, thus enabling en-abling relief people to help themselves them-selves in the provision of food for the winter. This meat will not be in competition com-petition with the normal channels chan-nels of trade in any sense of Llie wuiu uecauae iu win ue e,vc11 only to those on relief rolls who j could not purchase meat on the open market, and it will be given to them in addition to the normal nor-mal relief food requirements which they obtain through the local stores. It is expected at State Relief Headquarters that it will be necessary ne-cessary to go into a mutton canning can-ning program before very long, and the State Administration is now awaiting word as to the details of the sheep purchasing program. The percentage of recovery of edible meat from the cattle has been necessarily rather low because be-cause so many of these cattle were in very poor condition. Care has been exercised to use only the best and most edible portions por-tions of the stock. |
