Show STUDENT PLAN 1 WINS APPROVAL The Utah program to assist students in completing their education edu-cation up to their eighteenth year who may be compelled, or for various reason may prefer, j to seek some gainful employ-! ment in addition to their school work ,has won unusual recognition recogni-tion from President Hoover's emergency committee for employment. em-ployment. The programs was initiated in Utah several years ago by Dr. C. N. Jensen, state superintendent of public instruction. instruc-tion. Its execution has fallen to the lot of I. S. Noall, state supervisor super-visor of vocational education in trades and industries. A bulletin from Washington characterizes the Utah program in this respect as "one of the most comprehensive reported to the president's committee." The president's committee asked for a report from each state concerning any activities carried on to encourage and assist as-sist students to continue their education this year, while it is difficult to find employment, with preference naturally being given to those with dependents. In the absence of Dr. Jensen when the committee's letter arrived, ar-rived, it was answered by Mr. Noall. The bulletin continues: "Utah, Mr. Noall states, will follow the policy of seeking the full time enrollment of all persons per-sons not regularly employed up to the age of 18 years, this age limit being fixed by law. A series ser-ies of conferences with principals and superintendents is being held in which the advantages and limitations of school enrollment enroll-ment and problems of employment employ-ment are discussed. "U t a h employs competent school men as coordinators in connection with the high school organizations of the state, who have authority to make special arrangements for the enrollment of students when they require special programs of instruction or when they are employed in the fall months and unable to enter school within a reasonable time after the opening date. "The coordinator looks into cases of maladjustment and cases cas-es of students who seek to withdraw with-draw from school for economic or other reasons. As a result of this work the number of cases of maladjustment in school has been reduced to a minimum." |
