Show IMPROVE ROAD TO NEW BRIDGE Highway from Flagstaff to Utah State Line by Way of New Bridge to be Worked An extensive program of improvement improve-ment will be made in roads leading to the new Colorado river bridge, it was announced Tuesday. The program was outlined at a conference at the bridge site between be-tween Utah and Arizona state officials of-ficials and will be carried into effect ef-fect as rapidly as funds can be found available. It calls for spending about $20,-000 $20,-000 during the next fiscal year beginning be-ginning July 1, in surveying and laying lay-ing out a route from Flagstaff, to the Utah state line south of Kanab. In addition to this the Arizona authorities au-thorities plan to put nearly $86,-000 $86,-000 into construction of the worst stretches of road from Cameron on the south side of the river to the bridge itself. With these two items the Arizona highway budget in this section will be fully subscribed, but the Arizona road department has pledged that It will put some money into construction con-struction of the worst stretches on the road north of the river in the near future. Two possible routes have been outlined out-lined for the road, one joining the Grand canyon road in the Kaibab forest at Jacob's Take and the other skirting the rim of the Kaibab plateau pla-teau on the edge of the Houserock valley. Arizona authorities have been definitely committed to improving the entire road within a period of three years time. The worst stretches will be improved first to get the traffic over the sand dunes and through the washes. In Utah, the Zlon-Mt. Carmel loop and the Bryce-Grand Canyon roads will be practically completed to federal fed-eral aid standards long before this three year period. The Zion road will open to traffic later this year and, with the exception of a stretch from Gravel Springs Junction to Kanab, the Utah highway is already improved improv-ed to a high standard. |
