Show HEM STORM 'AT HURRICANE Streets Tirtual Rhers as 2 Inches of Rain Falis in Hour and a Half; Loss Estimated Es-timated at About 10,000 A torrential rain storm accompanied accom-panied by hail struck Hurricane and La Verkin Sunday noon and in an hour and a helf did damage dam-age estimated at $10,000. The Hurricane can3l was the principal sufferer, and it will reo.uire close to $5000 to repair the damage to the ditch and rebuild flumes. For miles the canal is filled with debris de-bris and in places is wiped completely com-pletely out. The town's water supply sup-ply was cut off. Wellington F. Gates dislocated his shoulder and received several bruises while working near Dixie power plant No. 4 at La Verkin Sunday. He was working on the canal when the bank gave w;ay and he dropper several feet. One of his helpers also received bruises. The Dixie Power company canal above La Verkin was damaged to an extent of $1500 or more. Seventy-five men are now at work rebuilding. Crops, principally cane and grapes, suffered damage by hail. Roads were washed out at places, but all are passable with the exception of the old road to Kanab which was closed for a few days. About $1000 damage was done by mud and boulders at La Ver-I Ver-I kin Hot Springs. The storm struck at 11 o'clock and for an hour and a half the streets of Hurricane were running over a foot of water. Automobiles were abandoned while the occupants occu-pants crambled to the sidewalks or assisted children and elderly persons to their homes. Cellars and corrals all over the town were flooded, and considerable consider-able damage was done to household house-hold effects. The downpour centered over La Verkin and Hurricane. Two heavy rains striking sections to the east and northeast and the southwest of Hurricane, apparently came together to-gether almost directly over the town. |
