Show v - i-i V SCOUTS ATTEND SOPAROVAN: The first annual Soparovan of the Zion National Park Council of the Boy Scouts of America was held at Cedar City, April 29-30. Three hundred hun-dred scouts and officials were present, pres-ent, and several hundred visitors viewed the various activities. The Parowan, Cedar City, St. George, Kanab, Toquerville, Rockville and Beaver district were represented. Director Maughan of the B. A. C, president of the council,, and Executive Execu-tive John A. Young presided over the various activities. Associate Regional Region-al Executive Oscar A. Kirkham was present to participate in the program. He brought with him Executive Anderson of he Timpanogos Council and Executive Lindblad of the Cache Valley Council. The Soparovan opened Friday night with a big get acquainted program. pro-gram. Following this all scouts and officials were guests of the B. A. C. at the opera, "Carmen." National Guard unit tents were provided the boys for shelter for the night. Saturday morning a parade traversed travers-ed the principal streets of Cedar City. The splendid marching of the numerous numer-ous troops was an inspiring sight. Following the parade a public meeting meet-ing was held in the tabernacle. Saturday afternoon the big council contests were featured. Troop 4 of Cedar City succeeded in capturing first place, with Toquerville second. I. Y. Bigelow, formerly of St. George is scoutmaster of the winning troop, while Paul Thurston is leader at Toquerville. The St. George scouts did not enter the contests as individual individ-ual troops. A district contest had been-held here previously, the winners win-ners being selected to represent us at Cedar City. Nevertheless the St. George troops placed high in the meet. A summary of places won by the St. George scouts follows. Troop 2 won third place in the troop membership member-ship advancement contest. Troop 1 finished fourth in this. This contest includes tests pass-ed since Jan. 1. Troop 1 took third in the parade. Tell Gubler of Troop 1 won fifth place in the individual handicraft exhibit. ex-hibit. In the harmonica solo contest con-test Rex Nelson of troop 2 won first lace and Ray Nelson of the same troop took third place. Theron Thompson of Troop 2 tied with a lad from Cedar City in the bugling contest. con-test. In the toss-up for place Theron got second. Tell Gubler and Max Woodbury of Troop 1 took third place in the Morse signaling. Walter Wal-ter Brooks and Rulon Cottam took first and Lloyd McArthur and Calvert Cal-vert Andrus took third in the Semaphore Sema-phore signaling. These boys are from troops 2 and 3 respectively. Troops 3 and 2 won second and third respectively in the first aid work. Grant Whitehead of troop 3 was awarded third place in the knot tying. Tell Gubler of troop 1 received second sec-ond prize 'for building a fire by friction, fric-tion, and Heber Thompson of troop 2 took fourth in this event. Walter Brooks of troop 2 and Calvert Andrus" of Tioop 3 were awarded second and fifth places respectively in lariat tlirowing. Lowell Woodbury took third in the grand final shoe rare. As a result of winning in these events the boys brought home many valuable prizes. The B. A. C. troop of Cedar City had previously raised $100 to be spent in prizes. Saturday afternoon scout officials met at an informal banquet. B. Glen Smith talked briefly here in representing repre-senting the St. George district. It was decided to meet again at Cedar Citv next year in the second annual Soparovan. The final event of the meet was the big court of honor meeting Saturday Satur-day night. At this meeting the following fol-lowing St. George scouts and officials received official awards. Star scout Rulon Cottam of Troop 2 and Tell Gubie:- and Carl Moss of troop 1; Lite scout Andrew Face and Walter Brooks of troop 2; Five-year veteran scout Carl Moss and Alan Wallis of troop 1 and Carlyle Thompson of I troop 2; Ten-year veteran scout: j Archie Wallis of troop 1 and B. Glen ! Smith of troop 3. The big event of j the evening was the awarding of the eagle rank to Scout Heber Thompson I of troop 2. j Forty-five scouts from St. George i attended the meet. They all report-! report-! ed a wonderful time, and vowed that j higher honors would roir.e to St. Gi-orci' next year. Toquerville troop, all in full ani- form, under their leader. Paul Thurs- ton. went tin to Sail Lake City to : spend a week there. The boys had j worked to earn sufficient money for this outing. The scouts of troop 3 are entertaining enter-taining their parents tonight at a troop anniversary party. |
