Show HONEY AS A MEDICINE HERE'S good news for the kids. An eminent English doctor has just written an article for the Lancet In which he states that honey Is a valu- . able medicine. That's just like telling tell-ing a small boy that watermelon is good for him (which, by the way, It Is). Honey was the candy of the ancient world. It Is frequently mentioned In the Bible, although sugar Is not once referred to. That's because cane sugar and beet sugar, our principal sources of sweetness, weren't known until a comparatively short time Rgo. When the Jew, the Greek or the Roman craved something sweet, he had to eat' sweet fruits or use honey, gathered by the bees from a thousand flowers. These old people knew that honey wen good food. They made a famous drink by mixing honey with water. They found this most refreshing and stimulating stimu-lating when they were tired. It has long been known that' sugar , nnd water would stimulate the heart. The Frenchman, with his glass of eau sucre. Is not such a sissy as some would have us think. Now comes Dr. G. N. Y. Thomas of London, who says and has proved that honey Is of great value in stimulating the tired body, both In health and In sickness. In his article he says that honey has a marked stimulating effect on the heart nnd Is of value In severe cases of malnutrition. He says It Is of more value in fevers than beef tea. which used to be the favorite Invalid food, and that it Is especially valuable in heart failure. Medicine used to be considered of value in proportion to its nastines The worse it tasted, the more good I' did you. That was a survival of the i days when all kinds of nauseating and disagreeable mixtures were poured If to the unfortunate patient. In the hope of disgusting the devil tlm' caused the disease and so driving him out. They apparently didn't hurt tl'e devil and they did disgust the pallet"-P.ut pallet"-P.ut he had to take thorn Just tl" same ! Today we are till from Missouri. W have to be shown. We know honey I good and pleasant food and If it Is ah'1 a good tonic and a heart stimuli"'1 then, by ull means, let's oat uiorl honey. |
