C Thorne pioneer Vernal photographer who died at his home Tuesday at the ag age of 80 SG MR THORNE was born barn In Bellwood Nebraska In 1883 1993 to George Edgar and and Louisa Melinda Wagoner Thorne He lie traveled to the Uintah Basin with wilh his parents at the age of four and resided here for the rest of his life with wilh the exception of seven years spent in Cal Cal- At the age of 17 a horse stumbled and fell on him putting an end to heavy ranch work To pass the time he sent for a small camera and was soon making making mak ing pictures of the neighbors and other subjects of Interest that came his way Before long his interest became an obsession obsession ob session and his hobby became a bus bus- iness loess MR THORNE bought the studio owned own own- ed by Celest Frank and proceeded to become at 19 a professional photographer pher lie He studied by correspondence with the New York School of Photography lIe He married Pauline a former teacher at Wilcox Academy in 1912 in San Francisco and they lived for seven years in Ukiah California He lie sold his studio there in 1919 and returned returned re reo re- re turned to Vernal MR THORNE'S extensive collection of prehistoric artifacts is housed at his studio and thousands have enjoyed hearing him tell of finding them and of the people who inhabited the Basin in that era He was Scout ScoutMaster Master of Troop No 1 I the first Boy Scout troop in the Uintah Basin for several years and has since been a member of various scout committees com corn and advisor in nature lore to a number of troops HE WAS a charter member of Kingsbury Kingsbury Kings Kings- bury Congregational Church his parents having been instrumental in the organizing organ organ- organizing izing of this Vernal church and was serving as a Deacon at the time of his death Mr Thorne Thome was Justice of the Peace for Uintah County for several years and later served as Juvenile Judge for both Uintah and Duchesne Counties THE PHOTOGRAPHER was a charter charter char char- ter member of the Vernal Lions Club and served as its first secretary He lie was appointed chairman of the first rationing board for Uintah County during during dur duro ing World War II II He was a member of the planning committee for the original original inal Uintah Basin Industrial Convention Mr Thorne is survived by Mrs Thorne two daughters Mrs Richard of New York City and Mrs Lawrence Lawrence Law Law- rence DeVed Vernal one son Larrie Pocatello Idaho four grandchildren Mrs David C C. C Lindsay San Jose California California California Cal Cal- Rebecca Martin and Stuart Thorne Pocatello one brother Gerald Madison Wisconsin lie He had a visit with his great-grandson great James David just three weeks before his death when Mr and Mrs Lindsay brought the baby to see him PRELUDE and postlude music was played by Kathleen Lindsay The Rever Rever- I end n-end Jack W.
