C and Mae Ruple was born bom in Vernal in 1891 She grew up in Island Park and attended grade school in Vernal When she was 13 Henry and Mae decided their young daughter needed the polish of the east cast and sent her to a Finishing School in Phillips berg New Jersey There she was known as the girl from the wild west the young maverick high spirited and certainly not stayed in the ways of oC New England SHE MARRIED Harry II Nelson of Nebraska and they lived in Myton She spent most of her married life liCe however in Rawlins Wyoming As a young matron matron matron ma ma- tron she was a vital entity in the com com- She was instrumental in starting the Public Library the first Boys Club The Voodoo Knights which later became be came affiliated with the Boy Scouts was a national leader of oC the Campfire Girls State Chairman of oC the National Democratic Association President of oC the Delphian Club President of oC the National Nation al Association of Federated Women's Club Volunteer Director of the State Red Cross After the death of her husband she was appointed Director of Juvenile In In- for the State of Wyoming DURING WORLD War II II she joined the patriotic call and worked U for Sor r rDouglas Douglas Aircraft The next ten years of f her life was spent in Vernal taking care of her mother mother mother mo mo- mo- mo ther Mrs Mae Ruple Not only did she make Mrs Ruple's remaining years yeWs bright ht but was able to continue with her interest in Civic Activities She was an active member of the DUP a achar charter char charter ter member of the Vernal Golden Age Center a charter member of the Vernal Vernal Vernal Ver Ver- nal Little Gallery of Arts and a member member member mem mem- ber of oC the Rebecca Lodge AFTER HER mothers mother's s death she started star ted her world travels First a year in inthe inthe inthe the and then to almost every major country in the world She loved humanity While visiting her lier son in Japan she became so fascinated by the Japanese culture that she stayed to teach high school for a year In India she was saddened by the poverty of the people however there were humorous sides sides- and these never escaped her quick wit Many of oC you will remember her short story entitled Holy Cow first published published pub pub- in the Vernal Express IN THE last few years Martha was greaty slowed down by crippling ar ar- Never having been ill in her she life resented this and reacted like a small caged tiger An individual of lesser character would have succumbed but not Martha she continued her yearly yearly year year- ly trips to Boston and Providence to visit her son Martin R. R Nelson and her daughter Virginia Bean She continued to work on her book which she had begun a year or so previous previous previous pre pre- to her illness When not able to write or even sit up she dictated into a tape recorder 24 hours after she returned to Vernal from Boston she suffered suffered suffered suf suf- suf- suf a stroke from which she never recovered 48 hours after she returned word was received that her book Americas Americas Americas Am erica's First Beautiful People The Early Early Ea Ea- Ea Pioneers had been accepted for publication This she never knew However How How- ever eVir she had requested that if the book were published she wanted the proceeds pro coeds to go to the DUP Mae Ruple Camp and the Vernal Little Gallery of Arts |
