Show Voices From The Dust The from Crom the Dust bust feature is selected from Crom the files lites of oC The Vernal Express and will be stories written as they appeared the date of oC publication noted at the top lop of oC each feature Vernal Uintah County June 9 1898 A short time ago our representative Wm Gibson was taken with the idea that to paint the motto Remember the Maine high upon the face lace of oC a cliff in the Ashley Canyon would be a lasting monument representing the sentiment sentiment sen send of oC the citizens of Ashley Valley He lie resolved to carry out his idea A painter was seen who agreed for a consideration to paint the motto and also 1 a picture of the lost battleship upon the cliff high above any point easily reached by persons inclined to vandalism or posting ordinary advertise advertised advertisements advertisements ments and a bargain was made on the spot for the painter to do the job MONDAY MORNING Mr Gibson with witha a wagon load of ropes and other tackle accompanied by a force of volunteer assistants repaired to the spot where the work was to be done which is atthe atthe at atthe the junction of the Ashley and the Dry Fork Canyons The work of adjusting the ropes and tackle was quickly and carefully done under the supervision of the painter Leo 0 O. O Voight whose life and limbs depended upon their being secure from any possible accident Mr Voight and his outfit would tip the scales at at about Ibs lbs and a new 8 5 inch four stranded manila rope was used to hoist him to the spot on the cliff selected for the painting which from measurements measurements measurements measure measure- ments taken was feet from the bottom bottom bottom bot bot- tom and feet from the top of the cliff not allowing for stretch of rope This would show the cliff to be 28 feet higher than the Washington Monument the highest in the world The point upon which the painting was made is the highest in the canyon LOOKING FROM the top of the cliff Ashley Valley spreads out from the mouth of the gorge lake a beautiful picture with its bro broad d fields of green dotted here and there with peaceful homes sheltered by shade trees which contrasted contrasted contrasted con con- with the b barren hills which surround surround surround sur sur- round the valley makes it look lik like an oasis in the desert It would take too much space to describe the wonderful view from this point and we will have to return to the original subject of this sketch The news of Mr Gibsons Gibson's project was spread pread from mouth to mouth and wagon wagon wagon wa wa- gon loads of women women and children were stationed where they could get a fullview full fullview fullview view of the work while it was being done AS SOON as the ropes were adjusted and the operators had filled their bread breadbaskets breadbaskets baskets baskets with the good things things' that the kind and thoughtful ladies had brought along Mr Voight was firmly lashed to his seat and was started on his perilous ascent The start was made from a ledge 60 feet up from the base of the cliff When Mr Voight was raised about ft from the ledge the twist in the rope caused him to whirl around very rapidly and to use his expression the canyon was full of cliffs There was cliffs cliffs' to the right of him cliffs to the left of him and cliffs all around him It looked as asi asif asif i if he was turning fast enough to throw his boots off The children yelled the women s screamed reamed and some some shed tears of sympathy for for as they supposed a doomed man but the twist was soon out of the rope and the brave German was hoisted to the point selected for forthe forthe the Start tart and the word Rem Remember ber t finished on Monday TUESDAY MORNING the work was again commenced and the lettering finished finished finished fin fin- by noon After dinner Mr Voight weakened and the painting of the ship was to be abandoned for the present Mr Voight promised however that some future time when his sand returned to finish the job |
