C Dear Mr Wallis I think It Is s about time we congratulated congratulated the people responsible for Cor makIng making mak ing the Uintah Basin Dasin about one of oC the most self sufficient areas in Utah especially ly lally the Vernal Chamber of Commerce They have spent a lot of time making this possible These benefits came about by encouraging private and Free Tree Enterprise En The profits from these do not revert back to the taxpayer as docs does government handouts I fully ly appreciate there are arc problems in doing things toward advancement in inthe inthe inthe the better U things n s of life such as hard work some odors and a few others not in complete appreciation I know I raised three children and saw they had a better than average education by this method and was never on wel wel- fare If we survive as a Democracy we are going to have to put forth some effort on our own part rather than just look at atthe atthe atthe the scenery and smell the fresh air and expect good brother John to keep us It doesn't take mental capacity to live at someone else's expense but it does take a little gray matter and elbow grease to live at your own It seems rather strange Governor Rampton would start to talk about encouraging encouraging en en- new industry in Utah In Inthe Inthe Inthe the four years I have been here when the economy got to a low ebb he got on the tax raising bandwagon without a thought toward getting new industry into into in in- to Utah to help out the already overburdened overburdened overburdened over over- burdened taxpayer Why didn't he think of this new idea eight years ago Cordially y yours J J. A McKnight length we request good judgment andreason and andreason andreason reason by the writer Letters must be signed However names will be withheld withheld withheld with with- held from Cram publication if requested by bythe bythe bythe the writer c- c I i Amendments Views Dear Editor Very little factual Information has been given to our citizens to help them decide on the proposed four amendments amendments amend amend- ments to the Utah Constitution These same basic proposals were voted down downin in 1966 because voters feared that which they did not understand Uintah County voted overwhelmingly against the Gateway amendment last election because our people did not wish to grant the legislature broad power po power to change the state constitution which powers had been reserved to themselves Proposition No 1 transfers power to the state legislature to appoint persons to perform auditing and other functions which heretofore have been performed by officials chosen through the elective process Proposition No 2 attempts to correct the breakdown of justice resulting from permissive courts by removing bail for persons suspected of certain crimes Some authorities on crime term this a dangerous trend toward presumption of guilt before proof of guilt Propositions No 3 and 4 remove the constitutional barrier that has prevented some consolidation of school districts and consolidation of city and county governments I would say strongly urge a No vote on 3 and 4 in the interest of keeping keeping keep keep- ing governmental decisions close to the people and of course preserving local government I am convinced that voters ar are more intelligent than politicians if presented the facts they will make the right decisions de de- W W.
