Show a r KITTEN ALL R By Sheila Colleen Merkley p t a e l j I Vernal Junior High boasts of an Aviation Science class which is now in its third sue suc- successful year So far though girls have been invited to enroll only minded aviation boys have availed themselves of this unusual opportunity It is unus unus- unus unusual ual because no other junior high in the state has a class of this type with a qualified pilot ilot as a teacher Roger Beckstead instructor is a licensed pilot and owns his own plane lie He states the class objectives are To acquaint students with various job op- op opportunities opportunities in the fields of avia avia- avia aviation tion and along with qualifications education and pay associated with each job To learn how an airplane flies and forces acting on it navi gallon gatlon chart reading radio navi- navi navigation navigation gation weather aircraft power power- plants aircraft instruments and federal aviation regula regula- regulations Mr Beckstead states that at the conclusion of the years year's work a serious student with little additional study would be beable able to pass the Federal A Avia- Avia Aviation via tion Agency's written private pilot exam y yIn In addition each student Is constructing a replica model airplane of balsa wood and tissue tissue sue from which they learn much about aircraft construct construct- construction ion and parts Flyable model rockets will be built later in the year Several field trips are also planned to areas such as My- My Myton Myton ton Radio Salt Lake Air Traffic Control Center and Tow Tow- Tower er and Hill Air Force Base Twenty four boys participate in this class Mr Davis junior high principal pal announced that snowballing would be permitted on the southwest corner of the school I grounds Only those students I who wish to participate should go into this area Snowballing I in any other place is forbidden I and student police are instruct instruct- instructed instructed ed to give tickets to students not following the directions Recently most junior high students vacationed or tended younger brothers and sisters for two days while their par par- parents visited schools and talked to teachers Some capable students assisted teachers by I acting as receptionists If teach teach- teachers ers were not able to see every parent appointments were made for a later date Both and parents agreed that the time was well spent Most 1 of the teachers were able to talk to 25 or 30 parents each day More mothers than fath fath- fath fathers ers attended Refreshments were served A pop bottle drive was spon spon- spon sponsored by the pep pcp club which consists of nineth graders only however they had a contest between the three grades Girls from the seventh grade won the contest A total of seven fifty dollars and two cents was earned Student Identification tags are being sold to the students of Vernal Junior These tags will have the students student's name address telephone no city state and other such in in- in information formation in case of an accident ent The students of Vernal Junior High are looking forward to toa toa a lyceum um that will be held Dee Dee- ember 15 It will feature Art Jennings as a clown Friday Vernal Junior High School wrestling team will play Craig find and Saturday a basket basket- basketball ball game with Rangely Both games will be held at Vernal Jr high I |
