Mapleton captured first place in the tournament. mwm Gaining doubleplays and breaking up a doubleplay were some of the items of interest in the State Mustang League Tournament in Roosevelt this past week. Roosevelt's shortstop nabbed nabb-ed a fly ball during a game with Lehi, Wednesday and then tagged out the baseballer running between second and third for a doubleplay. Mueller Park's first baseman gained gain-ed a doubleplay all by himself. Batt of Lehi was on first base due to a walk and then Patton popped up. Batt didn't stay on the bag and ran into the fielder. The fielder failed to catch the ball for an out, but he refused to panic as he caught the ball on the bounce and touched the bag for an out. The runner was called out for interference and a doubleplay was gained. Lehi had a shot at a doubleplay in the championship game against Mueller Park, Saturday, but they only on-ly gained one out as Aaron Roderick broke up the doubleplay. Roderick was walked and Brad Beck gained a fielder's choice. Roderick was forced out at second base, but crashed into the second baseman and Beck was safe at first base. The Lehi fans didn't like the sliding action at second base by the Mueller Park player, but there is always two sides to the story and the runner maintained main-tained it was an accident. One of the Mueller Park players, who was getting ready to bat, said, " That's the way the pros do it." Baseball fans in Roosevelt have had a lot to cheer about during Die baseball season. Union High School of Roosevelt placed second in the 2-A state tournament. The Cougars beat San Juan and Emery in tournament games and lost to South Sevier in the championship game. However, the second se-cond place finish by the Cougars was the best finish in a state baseball tournament tour-nament for the Union team since they placed second in 16. Roosevelt's Mustang League team captured third place in the state meet. Mapleton defeated Mt. Olympus twice, for first place in the Bronco Sectional Sec-tional Tournament, Saturday. The Mapleton team won the Slate Mustang League Tournament tw o years ago in Vernal. Mt. Olympus beat Vernal on a forfeit in the first round and Mapleton beat Roosevelt, 13 to 3. Vernal's Ver-nal's B team was misinformed as to the day and time of the first round game. Mt. Olympus downed Draper, 12 to 1 and Mapleton beat Springville, 5 to 3, in second round games. Draper downed Roosevelt, 8 to 6 and Springville downed Vernal's B team, 25 to 1, Wednesday. Draper beat Springville and Mt. Olympus downed Mapleton, 6 to 3. Mapleton downed Draper H-4 in order to advance into the title game. Springville jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning in the game with Vernal and added 15 runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth inning. inn-ing. Vernal scored its only run in the third inning. Vernal lost to Roosevelt in a bonus fun game that had nothing to do with the tournament. Vernal A's team will host the 19&3 West Zone Bronco Tournament, August 10, 11, 12. 13 and 15. The Northwest Nor-thwest Region winner will battle the North Region winner, August 10 at 5 p.m. and Vernal's A team will host the South Division winner, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Coast Region team will have a bye in the first round and will tattle the winner of the South Division-Vernal Division-Vernal game, August 11 at 7:30 p m. The winner of the Northwest Region-North Region-North Region game will take on the winner of the Coast Region-South Division-Vernal game, August 12 at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for August 15 at 5 p.m. and if a second game is needed it will follow the first title game in 20 minutes. Games are also set at 5 p.m. on August 11, 12 and 13. Eight teams of 11-12 year olds will slug it out in St. Joseph, Missouri, August 18 24 for the Bronco Ix-ague World Series Championship. Five entries en-tries from the continental United States and one each from Hawaii, Mexico and Puerto Rico will play in the double elimination world series for the right to be crowned the Bronco World Champions. i I I ! v., .
