Show " CONQUERING - - CANCER T Facts From A c""" The National Cancer Institute New Research May Help Prevent Cancers The National Cancer Institute' In-stitute' (NCI) will explore the use of vitamins to help prevent cancer. New research will aim at preventing or reversing revers-ing cancer development. The new Chemo-preven-tion Program is aimed at finding ways to halt or reverse the development of cancer in people already exposed to cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) or potential po-tential carcinogens. Such agents as beta-carotene, a common dietary source of vitamin A, which is being tested in clinical trials; and vitamins C and E, which are being examined in laboratories; labora-tories; may prevent, inhibit or reverse cancer developments develop-ments at the cellular level. Natural vitamin A is known to have toxic effects in animals, particularly when ' given in high doses. Researchers Re-searchers are now trying to ' develop synthetic substitutes substi-tutes that are as effective, but non-toxic. Until these studies are complete, experts recommend recom-mend that the best way to obtain minimal daily requirements re-quirements of vitamins, minerals and protein, is through a balanced diet that includes ample fresh fruits and vegetables. |
