Show Suggestions given for preventing burglaries Chief Robert T. Downard, Vemal City Ci-ty Police Department, in conjunction with the International Association of Chief's of Police, proclaimed June as Burglary Prevention month. There are more than 3.3 million residential burglaries last year, which means every ten seconds somewhere in the United States a home is being burglarized. With school out and warm weather, the vacation season has started fostering foster-ing a high burglary potential. Chief Downard offers tips to homeowners for burglary prevention. Lock all doors and windows. Connect lamps, radios, and television televi-sion in various parts of your home to time-all automatic timers to create a "lived-in" appearance to the outside. Leave shades and blinds in normal positions. Make sure that no deliveries of any kind (mail, newspaper, milk, etc.) are made in your absence. Arrange to have the lawn mowed or snow shoveled at normal times. Store valuables in a sale deposit vault. Close the garage door. (A garage can have a particularly abandoned look.) . Alert police and a close neighbor to look for unusual activity in your absence. Arrange automatically-timed outdoor out-door lighting for burglary prevention. Retrain from notifying the newspapers of your whereabouts until un-til your return. There is no such thing as a "burglar proof" home, but following these suggestions sug-gestions Downard said will help protect pro-tect your home and possessions whenever you are away. |
