Aldan 'gaMe Four all-star tournaments were held in Vernal in the summer of 1981 as the Land of the Dinosaurs was the location for the Mustang State Tournament, Pony League Sectional Tournament, Bronco League Sectional Tournamen and Bronco Regional Tournament. However, this year the Vernal Baseballers will battle teams on the road and the only baseball noise will be heard during the all-star team practices. The tournament had many wild and excitable games and one of the wildest games took part between Roosevelt and Mapleton in the Mustang League State Tournament. Inches decided the champion in the Mustang League Tournament in Vernal last year as Roosevelt's Troy Thompson failed to touch first base and two runs scored to give the undefeated Mapleton crew a 4 to 3 victory in the . title game. Roosevelt owned a 3-2 lead in the first championship game and with runners on second and third Chad Kimber tapped the ball to the pitcher. Roosevelt pitcher, Drew Patterson nabbed the ball and threw it to Thompson for what should have been the game ending play. However, the throw was a bit high and Thompson leaped up in the air for the ball, caught it and missed the ball when -he returned to the earth. Kimber was safe at first base and Graves crossed home plate with the game tying run. Thompson held on to the ball due to all the confusion and Brandon Collings scored all the way from second base to enable Mapleton to win the game by the score of 4 to 3. A win by Roosevelt would have forced the two crews into a second championship game. Teams from West Valley and Granite , provided fans with two interesting games. One game was almost an all nighter and the second championship game was an early morning riser. Home runs by Greg Smith of Granite and Steve Carter of West Valley decided the winners in the Pony Sectional Tournament. Smith connected for a homer in the top of the 11th inning, which gave Granite a heartpounding 3 to 2 victory in the first championship game ever over West Valley that was concluded at 11:30 p.m. on July 3lst 1981. A two run home run htost with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning by Carter gave the West Valley all-stars a 10-8 win in the second championship game, August 1.
