Vernal to encounter Roosevelt The Vernal Junior High 9th grade football crew will invade Roosevelt Thursday for a 4 p.m. game with the Rough Riders on the Union High School football field. The game will be the season opener for the Panthers. "Our athletes are working really hard. We had a super practice Monday. They have a super attitude. The contest with Roosevelt should be a good ball game," stated Vernal Junior High football coach, Craig Monsen. Offensive starters for the Panthers, according to Monsen, should be: Joe Newell, center; Mike Slaugh, left guard; Rod Hilkey, right guard; Larry Curtis, left tackle; David Gurr, right tackle; Tony Lewis, left end; Kenny Rasmussen, right end; Mark Slaugh, wingback; Rick Porter, quarterback; Monte Mecham, fullback and Robert Merrell, tailback. Returning starters to the Panther team are safetys Devin Bailey and Brian Smuin. "Bailey, , Smuin, Craig Funk, linebacks and Darin Price, cornerback, have been looking tough on defense. The whole team has been looking tough," remarked Monsen.
