Show SPORTS FLASHBACKS Uintah topples Union Cougars and Carbon Dinos in football battles The Uintah-Union rivalry has been a hot one since Union became a school in the early 1950's. Each school takes turns winning and losing in the series and a story about a Uintah-Union football foot-ball game follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Oct. 22, 1959. L'INTAH STEAMROLLERS UNION 16-13 Uintah's powerful grid machine Thursday of last week rode over the Union visitors to gain three touchdowns in the first quarter and chalk up a final victory of 46.13. This keeps the Utes as high team on the Region Seven totem-pole. totem-pole. The Utes opened the game by kicking to Union and after the visitors failed to gain they were forced to kick and Uintah started its march for the first TD. Lee and Roberts both picked up a first down. Uintah had a holding penalty placing the ball on Union's 28-. 28-. yard line. Lube carried to the 18, then Lee carried the ball on three tries and on the third one he scored standing up. the try for the extra point failed and Uintah was ahead 6 to 0. Uintah kicked to Union and Terry Bastain carried the ball back to the 25-yard 25-yard line. On the next play Yergensen fumbled and it was recovered by Smuin on Union's 22 yard line. Ip carried for Uintah and Union was offsides, placing the ball on the 8-yard line. On the next play Dick Roberts carried the ball over for another Ute TD.and the score was 13 to 0. Lee again kicked off to Union and Buddy Holgate returned the ball to the 38-yard line and when he was tackled he' fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Britt Horrocks for the Utes on the 38-yard line. Lynn Smuin carried the ball to the 21-yard 21-yard line for a first down. Smuin on the next try carried to the 11-yard line for another down. Uintah was caught holding and a 15-yard penalty was imposed. Lube passed to Wright to pick up 15 yards and then Lube passed to Jim McNaughton for another T D. Lee kicked the extra point and the Utes were ahead 20 to 0. Lee again kicked off to Union's Ilutchings and he carried to the 48-yard line. Hforne Glines hit the Uintah line for a first down on the 37. On the next play John Merkley hit Glines over the goal line for Union's first touchdown. The missed Iheextra point and the tally was 20 6. Glines kicked off for Union, Roberts fumbled and Union recovered the ball. Union took to the air and on the third try Lee intercepted Merkley's pass on the 25-yard line. After successive ground plays by Roberts, Lee, Smuin and Jim McNaughton they fumbled the ball on the 25-yard line and Ilarmston recovered. Union made a first down to the 45-yard 45-yard line. Merkley passed to Glines for another first down. But here Uintah held and Union punted to the 28. On the first play Lube dropped back to his 20-yard 20-yard line and passed to Roberts on Uion's 30-vard line and Roberts was clear and scored another TD for the Utes. Again Lee converted for Uintah 27 to Union 6. On an exchange of plays Lynn Smuin carried over for another TD from the 3-yard line. Lee's kick was good but Uintah was offisdes and the second try was no good. The half ended with Uintah 33 to Union 6. The second half opened with Union kicking to Uintah. Lube passed to McNaughton for a first down on the 44. Lube passed to Roberts for a first down on the 30. Another pass from Lube to Wright carried the ball to the 3-yard line. Lube carried it over on the next play for a touchdown. Lee again converted con-verted and the score was Uintah 40 to Union 6. On another play exchange, Union passed and Roberts intercepted Merkley's pass on the 30-yard line. Lynn Smuin carried for a first down to the 15 and then George Ix-e bruised his way over the pay stripe for a TD. Lee's kick for the extra point was no good and Uintah was 46 and Union 6. Lee kicked for Uintah and on a successive drive down the field with Union's Merkley, Bastain, Yergensen and Glines carrying the ball, Yergensen went over for Uion's second touchdown. Gordon Ilarmston kicked the extra point and the board read Uintah 46 and Union 13. Union tried to score again by taking to the air but the game ended with Nebeker passing to Bastian. Both coaches substituted freely in the closing minutes of the game. Uinlah was able to pour on the power when it was needed. Lube's passing was outstanding and the running of Roberts, Lee, Smuin and McNaughton was good. On the Union side Merkley, Glines and Yergensen played good ball in the backfield and Ilarmston, Hut-chings Hut-chings and Dudley played well on the line. McNaughton, an end took a pass from quarterback Jim Lube and rambled 35 yards for the first touchdown in the initial period. He scooted 25 yards for the second and then added his third in the third period with a 45-yard run. Dick Roberts tallied the second Ute TD on a 15-yard end run which wifc set up by a pass from Lube to Lynn Smuin Brian Wright made the other Uintah touchdown on a 35-yard pass from Lube. Lulie, a senior getting his first starting call, performed well in directing the Utos's offense. Linemen singled out for a stellar play were Herb Snyder, center and Charles Alexander, a transfer tackle from Texas who hits' the sclaes at 100 pounds. Carbon got its only touchdown in the third quarter."
