Show Lets Let's 5 play bridge By lIy Juanita Oden I have had quite a response to this new bridge column One request has been to show actual the hands bidding and play In the future you can look forward to this addicts How many of you bridge have heard these adages 1 Second hand low 2 Third hand high 3 Always return your partners partner's lead Right Wrong II About the second secondhand secondhand secondhand hand why low-why should you let someone finesse a queen through your king when you might make one of your cards good or help your partner by covering I firmly believe in covering any card led 6 5 8 7 9 10 if I 1 can do it without hurting my hand Now as to third hand high If my partner leads say the three of clubs and the dummy hand goes down with Q- Q J 9 I will not play my King to betaken be betaken betaken taken by the Ace and setting up all the clubs on the board This will confuse the declarer and I will more than likely take my King later on As to number three above when my partner leads she may just be trying to get out of the lead By looking at the board thinking of the bidding sequence I may be able to figure out a much better return lead than the suit my partner lead The declarer may beholding beholding be beholding holding a K-J K combination in a suit usually the weak suit on the board and my partner may be holding the A- A Q If the board has a short hort is hoping to trump my best return may very well be a trump The thing to do is to try and picture your partners partner's holding and make the best return lead for you and your partner In fact before you blindly return your partners partner's lead think about it You may find yourself setting hands instead of letting the contract be made Any questions Call |
