J M. M Roche the former Chairman of the Board of General Motors The committees committee's committees committee's committees committee's com com- purpose is to enlist the support of employers for the National Guard and Reserve components of the Army Navy Marine Corps Air Force and Coast Guard and to increase public awareness of the vital role of these forces in our overall national defense effort The need for the committee was recognized by the Department of Defense when it became clear that with the cessation of the draft the bulk of the nations nation's capability to respond to future emerge emergencies cies would fall to the Guard and Reserve components Also with military service no longer a apart apart apart part of a young mans man's future employers might not be inclined to encourage military obligation on the part of their employees The committee was established to emphasize the positive factors that can be derived from active support of those who elect to participate inthis inthis in inthis this nations nation's military citizen-military forces One major factor that is of concern in both the military and civilian worlds is cost Over 50 per cent of defense expenditures expenditures expenditures ex ex- ex- ex are directed towards manpower With the high manpower cost of national security there is an economy attached to maintaining a strong Guard and Reserve In that it cost 80 per cent less to maintain a Guardsman or Reservist compared to his active duty counterpart In the total defense picture the Guard and Reserve components comprise 30 per cent of our defense capability yet they require less than 5 per cent of the defense budget ARE AHI other assets associated with Guard and Reserve Employees that are sometimes taken for granted or not recognized at all These men and women have a built in type of future security whereby if they complete the required number of years they have a retirement income they can depend on with medical and other benefits they can enjoy before and after retirement Also there is an automatic raise that the employee earns that does not cost the employer a cent His Ills service pay may cover those extras which may not otherwise be available to him In addition the individual is often learning job related skills and increases in rank bring more and more learning of leadership discipline and working with people Members of the Guard and anH n Reserve components are active members of the community There is no organization m more re capable of responding in time of natural disaster than these militarily trained units When emergency medical aid search and rescue water purification and protection of property are required the Guard and Reserve are there to perform These are the men and women who should receive a fair shake from all Americans Whether completing obligated tours or continuing their Reserve or Guard affiliation to retirement their service is for forone forone forone one purpose only and that is to ensure the security of our ration nation This surely is worth the small sacrifices that sometimes must be he made to give them the support they deserve rv I l lA A young moose is so dependent on its mother that she has to drive it away in spring when she is ready to bear her next young |
