Show RECREATION CENTER ACTIVITIES by Delmar Schick, Mike Zdunich Close and exciting basketball games were the features of the past week at recreation after the first two days of league play were completed. The game of the week was seen in the Senior league lea-gue between the Cougars and the Pirates. With but seconds to go it looked like a sure upset for the underdog Pirates, but a foul shot by Louie Sarrao and a quick basket by "Dead Eye" Phil Martinez Mar-tinez gave the Cougars enough for a tie at the end of regulation play an dfrom there the Cougars Cou-gars went on to win in the overtime over-time period. Joe Costello was top man for the losers. Other games in the Senior league lea-gue saw Copperton 7th lose by one point to the Bingham Miners. Min-ers. Navy Jrs. dumped the Miners, Min-ers, the Cougars eeked out Navy Jrs., Pirates downed Copperton 8th, and Copperton 8th won over ov-er Copperton 7th. Top scorers for the Senior league after the first two rounds are: 1. Phil Martinez, Mar-tinez, Cougars; 2, Joe Costello, Pirates; 3, Mike Gonzales, Cougars; Cou-gars; 4, Tommy Lovat, Pirates; 5, Gilbert Pando, Navy Jrs. In the Junior league the big surprise came as Spuds Gang rolled over the Copperton Hawks 16-2. Coach Phil Compagno had his team in a tight zone defense that completely baffled the Copperton Cop-perton offense. Dallas Hakanson scored seven points for the league lea-gue - leading Spuds Gang while speeay ivime Jonnson collected Copperton's only goal. Other games in the Junior league lea-gue saw Ernest Davies drop in 18 points to lead his Mustangs to a victory over Copperfield. Copperton Cop-perton Cats defeated Copper-field Copper-field and the Bees to remain tied with the "red hot" Spuds Gang. The Copperton Cats are led by classy little Jerry Stillman who is one of the best ball players in the Junior league. Copperfield eeked past the Bingham Bees, with Arthur Fullmer Full-mer taking high point honors for the Copperfield crew, who was closely followed by Roy Yam-ando. Yam-ando. Fred Pando and Marshall LaComb were top guns for the losers. Leading scorers for the Junior league are: 1, Ernest Da-vies, Da-vies, Mustangs; 2, Dallas Hakanson, Hakan-son, Spuds Gang; 3, Jerry Still-man, Still-man, Cats; 4, Joey Robertson, Spuds Gang; 5, George Rekoutis, Hawks, In the Pee Wee league it's the Princess theatre who rests on top by virtue of a 16-6 victory over the Copperton Seagulls. Georgie Sluga led the scoring -with eight points and was well assisted by Norbert Lopez and Floyd Tru-jillo. Tru-jillo. Donnie Wright collected all six of the Seagull points. A Ping Pong tournament is being run off at the Teen Age club for both the boys and girls. In the boys division: Donnie Tyson, Ty-son, Brent Peterson, Berto Mor-etti, Mor-etti, John Mitchell and Carl Niedrich seem to be the ones to beat, while in the girls division Norma Nevers, Cheryl Greene, Sandra Laycock and Leila Johnson John-son seem to have the edge. - c |
