| Show CONGRESS FAVORS NATIONAL DEFENSE SENATORS AND representatives GO 00 ON RECORD ON THE ARMY AND NAVY PLAN in the senate sixty three favor program and but one against house stands 69 for and two twenty nty three against washington A canvass of congress comple completed teI sunday by the now new york american shows un an overwhelming majority in favor ot of increasing the strength of 0 tho tha army and navy in both senate and house tho the following questions were putto put to senators and representatives I 1 do you favor increasing the strength of the army and navy 2 it so to what extent on the bare qu question of increased defenso defense the answer was clear and overwhelming the question as aa to the extent ot of defense brought plans from a program somewhat short of that proposed by president wilson to proposals for four and five and six battleships a year the bulk of the legislators however were prepared to leave the extent of the program to the congressional committees or to the military experts among the democrats a sentiment favoring submarines mines and air raft in preference to battleships developed ve loped and in several cases increases in the tho army wore were deemed subordinate to augmented naval strength here Is the way according to the poll that congress stands upon the issue of the democrats in the house are in favor of the increase while but seventeen are registered as against it it the republicans aligned themselves thoma elves tor for and four against it thirty one democrats and forty six republicans were absent and thirty seven democrats and twenty eight republicans were noncommittal the socialist congressmen stood one for and one against it while the only ili ni 1 himself to opposed to fo ho in the senate forty democrats were for the greater measure of prepared desm with one against it eight appearing as absent and seven declining to voice their views twenty three republicans were in favor of the increase with no dissenting vote voice while twelve were absent and five noncommittal coin the total figures for the house show for and twenty three against the increase with including one independent who was absent not voting the the senate total shows sixty three for and one against with thirty two either absent or not voting |
