| Show IN THE WOODPILE its not a nice ilice thins thing to make a pr promise ornise and then not keep it its doubly bad when you aro are governor of a bit big state and make your promise publicly before a large lari c concourse of pollo who hear you gratefully mid and applaud heartily your public spirit and interested inte interested te to concern for their welfare also when you repeat that promise several times and other high officials of your state machinery sit in the amen corner and second your iro promise miso then it certainly looks like hell hall when you deliberately turn around and net efly 0 ily break that promise but do it ir in an underhanded manner which bears all the earmarks ear marka and wattles of the double cross wo we are speaking of convict labor on the roads of beaver county and auw they arn am NOT coming this spring in accordance with the promise of governor bill spry and warden pratt of the penitentiary tent tertiary iary made to the people of this county for the awit two years its a long sad story and points to but one thing there is sure somo some in this woodpile nearly every citizen of beaver remembers the visit of the governor and the warden last luring during homecoming week because nearly every citizen was on hand to greet greek them it will also be remembered that there was much speechifying speechify ing in the pub lie ite square about the greatness of southern utah and the need of good roads roada and that both the governor and the warden gave their unqualified support to the proposition that the convict camlo caird should be moved to beaver county this spring following the completion of the work in washington county tt it is ia also alo generally known that a special committee from this county and from millard courty hold a big medicine t talk alk in salt lake with the state road commission where assurances were again given that tho the convicts would certainly bo be used to close up the bad gaps on the grand canyon highway in this county and in millard further it will bo remembered that the salt lake papers a few weeks ago carried stories storie to the effect that every thing was in practical readiness readings i for the transfer of the convicts to bealar inducing our own county commissioners comal to begin preparations for their reception it is not generally known that state engineer beers and warden pratt made a secret and hurried trip to beaver two or three geeki ago they went botho to tho vicinity of cove fort an and inspected the section ot of road where the proposed work was to he be done thov lid did not stop in beaver neither did they seek counsel of anyone in beaver apparently they did not tarry for fear some one would speak to them 11 subsequently it was learned that hat these officials were accompanied on their trip of inspection by state road agent august thiessen mr thessen apparently feared the coming of the con victa because it might interfere with his road job dewent A to the unwarranted length of F tating to warden pratt that beaver county harmoney had money enough to finish the state highway within its borders and lid did not need the convict labor that seemed to suit warden pratt right down t to the ground ho he needed no further peg on which to hang his broken pron promises liFeS hurrying back to salt lake lie he made ir nde immediate preparations for the transfer of the convicts to davis county nor would he be listen to the urgings of members of the road commission that the camp ie e divided and part of the convicts he be brought to beaver county governor spry acquiesced in this change of program and became a party to the broken promise the commercial hub of beaver the prominent nent business men an and the citizens generally who have striven strenuously for more tha two years to secure the aid of the state convicts were ignored mr thiessen Thi esson a man directly interested te in keeping the convicts anav upset the beans beam he found the state officials eager and willing to help hina him scatter them it is ia worthy of note in this connection that the salt lake route and the lie state officials are very friendly it is also worthy of note that the salt lake route proposes pro to build up tip a largo large tourist travel to the grand canyon by way of df lund arid and cedar city it may or may not be significant that all the work done on the grand canyon highway by the convicts has been between lund and the grand canyon ind that it may now be rated among the impossibilities to get t bat aid north of cedar city this paper hinted something to this effect last winter and got an awful rise from E several everal different sou sources reds this latest move assures us we were not so BO far wrong in our prognostications in conclusion we rr right ight say that the state highway is much like a chain it is t a little better belter than its weakest link it will never be a good highway until these bad spots are smoothed out personally here in beaver beave r we do not acutely mourn the loss of the convicts because beaver is in daretty fair shape anyway and will vote more money for roads this year we did hope however to get the convicts started here ar ard and d run them over into millard county to fix up that bad stretch of road which seems destined to he bo constructed in no other way taking it by arid and large kirge we are arc now nov back where we were two years ago ai far as the middle portion of the state high way is concerned it looks like we must spit on our ha ds and start dl over again |
