Show tate state off officials break ib I b pro promises mio ses sudden change of program announced taking convict camp to davis county instead of beaver warden pratt makes secret visit work of two years is total loss JOSs despite tho the efforts of the leading citizens of toniy county and tho the beaver commercial club over a period of two years to secure tho the services of the state convicts con victa in the completion of beavers portion of the grand canyon highway coupled with the promises of governor spry warden pratt and the state road commission a sudden change of program has bega announced which shelves beavers hopes for the summer if not for another year the convict camp will be moved bodily from washington to davis county even though beaver county commissioners had already begun preparations for the reception of tile the convicts watch was confidently expected earlier in the spring the news was given out officially here this week during the visit of richard R lyman jesse WP wf Jewkes and air ri morgan of the road commission at a meeting with members of the comm commercial erceal club the party came to inspect the condition of the rocky ford dam road between beaver and milford upon which the delta land water company has been urged to do sufficient repair work that the road might be accepted by I 1 the county they also inspect edthe new work on the state hi highway ahw ay which is projected north to the millard county line and the sec tion which was to have been constructed by the convicts acting gag aa sp kesman for the party mr lym lyman an reported that warden pratt had decided to move the convict camp to davis county following a hurried visit he made to beaver recently fai in ir company with state engineer Erg ineer beers warden pratt had declared it inadvisable to divide divi do tile the camp at the present time and pu put forward the further objection that he had not enough men for road work on account of certain water improvements now under way at the penitentiary it was further urged that there wai wa not elou enough gh work to be done in this county to justify moving the convicts here and that taht beaver county had money enough to do her bar own work anyway mr lyman further stated that as the commissioner in charge of this county J he had not been jK in regard legard to the change of plans clans and realized that an ini injustice ustice was being done for which there appeared to be no remedy ile he said that all efforts must now be bent to securing a division of the camp next fall when it might be possible to secure a contingent of the convict for work here disappointment is keenly felt by members of the commercial club and citizens generally generall y in in i view of the public promises made here last summer during the visit of the governor and the warden who spoke to a largo large gathering during homecoming home coming week the people wore then assured that the convicts would be brought here this thia spring to the high highway way between beaver and cove fort in i NIJI Millard lard count county y and to carry the he work on toward kanosh a stretch of road that millard shows no disposition to finish and which will apparently never be finished unless done by convict labor notwithstanding the vast amount of work done in washington i county and that most of the highway is in fair adape the road cannot bo advertised to the public as a means of easy access to the grand canyon until the beaver and millard portions are finished this thi s county will probably vote sufficient funds to complete the road within her boundaries but the efforts to fill up the millard county gaps have ave come to naught and will a ab 61 result in nothing fur for another year kis it is openly hinted hero here by i those who have hav e been boosters boasters bo for the h anway that the work on the southern soul hern portion was done at the behest of the salt lake route which plans to promote tourist travel from lund to the grand canyon with this work done don there ethere is not much concern about the highway north of cedar city and it is up to the countis to get along as best they can |
