Hammond, Bookseller and Stationer, Logan, Utah. Francis Sharp, Esq. (Esquire) of Smithfield sent in the programme for the celebration of the 24th on the 25th, in that town. It arrived too late to be inserted, but is a very interesting one, promising a very enjoyable time. Wm. (William) Richards of the 2nd ward, this city, is the owner of a pig, nearly a month old, that has six well defined feet. The two extra pedals grow out of the two four legs. The little porcine is as lively and happy as can be, and uses all six of its feet when it travels. Last Wednesday, the wife of Mr. George Merrill, of Smithfield, on preparing a salve for salt rheum, after a formula recommended by a friend, mixed together some nitric acid and quicksilver, producing an explosion which scattered those ingredients all over the room and into Mrs. Merrill's face, burning it quite badly, and jeopardizing her eyesight for a time. Last Sunday evening, Bro. (Brother) Isaac McDougal, an aged employee of the temple, met with quite a serious accident. He was on the scaffold about six or eight feet above the ground talking to some belles below him, when he lost his balance and fell, striking his head on some rocks below; he received a very severe cut on his head, Dr. (Doctor) D. B. Lamoreaux dressed the wound and fixed the old gentleman up so that he will get along all right. W, N. Thomas, Esq. (Esquire) was down from Beaver canyon a few days ago. He reports the two saw mills there as rushing work. Recently, at one of these mills, which is owned by him, 75,000 feet were sawed in 55 working hours. About six hours of the 55 were consumed in sharpening the saw, &c. (etc.), so that the actual sawing time was but about 49 hours. This gives an average of over 1,500 feet per hour. Ed. (Edward) Holden of Logan was the sawyer. How's that for lively work? |
