Show DANGEROUS PHOTOGRAPHIC COUNTERFEITS.-The photographic camera is playing an important part in the art of counterfeiting. Chief Brooks, of the Treasury Department service, has gathered in a large number of counterfeit notes so skillfully made as to be accepted by the banks. The fiber paper has been the principal protection heretofore, because counterfeiters have been unable to procure it; but the photograph reproduces it and the plate-work almost with perfection, and very rapidly. The red letter numbering is the weak point. It is photographed black and the washing of red over it may be detected with a glass. These photographic issues are appearing everywhere-in San Francisco and Boston-and no trace of the men engaged in the business is yet found. The common operators have been weeded out of the business and first-class talent only, it is believed, is now engaged. The Bank of England's plan of destroying all notes that come into its hands and issuing new ones is urged as a remedy. |
