Show SMITHFIELD PRIMARY ASSOCIATION. Editor Leader. - The Primary Association of Smithfield held its annual conference here this afternoon. The secretary read a report of which the following is a synopsis: The Primary Association of Smithfield was organized March 26th, 1879. It now has six officers and 282 members; has held 16 meetings during the past year, with an average attendance of 100 members. The income for the year has been $36.37, and the disbursements $33.07, leaving a balance in the treasury of $3.30. In addition to this the association has between four and five bushels of wheat on hand. It has donated $5 towards building the Logan Temple, and $5 for the erection of the Smithfield Tabernacle. During the year the little ones have learned, and presented at their meetings a long list of songs, recitations, dialogues, etc. And they have their own instrumental music. The occasion of which I write was graced by several of those interesting exercises. Quilts have also been made and other laudable enterprises engaged in, some of the results of which are shown in the preceding financial report. The necessary officers, including their dearly beloved president, Sister Martha Williams, were presented for the consideration of this conference, and sustained without a dissenting vote. And after benediction by Bishop Farrell, the members dispersed with a becoming order, which some adult assemblies might pattern after with profit. I take more than ordinary pleasure, Mr. Editor, in presenting this account of one of the youthful hives of Deseret - for surely honey, and not bitterness, will result from so thrifty and happy an institution. The cause is truly an humble one, but none the less fraught with the choicest of blessings for the future of Zion's children; and also with honor to those thus engaged in smoothing and adorning the road, and in leading little travelers to walk therein. Yours in the covenant, A. P. Welchman, Smithfield, Mar. (March) 26, 1881. |
