Show HYRUM NOTES. HYRUM U. O. - On Monday, Febr. 20th, the general meeting of the stockholders of the Hyrum U. O. was held at 10 a.m. The Secretary read the statement for the year. I can only show the present condition: Total resources including real estate, merchandise, lumber, &c., $35,590. Liabilities including stock $31,450. There was no dividend decided. The stockholders accepted Mr. C. C. Shaw's motion made in the board meeting, viz: "That we as the stockholders in the Hyrum United Order accept the new store as a very handsome dividend for the year 1881:" In addition to the new store, the company has rebuilt the shingle mill and otherwise improved their machinery. The amount laid out in improvements for the year was $3,500. It was resolved, "That we offer the $5,000 surplus stock for sale, giving all our people an opportunity to join our prosperous business." On Friday last the company purchased the saw-mill and improvements thereunto belonging from Holt, Wright & Co. For $1,500. The mill is situated at Devil's Gate in Blacksmith Fork Canyon. SHOOTING MATCH - A shooting match took place on Monday afternoon last near the Hyrum Grist Mill between the members of the Hyrum rifle club. The prize offered was a Browning rifle, valued at $30?. From the score it will be seen that some excellent shooting was done. Mr. George Wilson carried off the gun. This is the second gun this young gentleman has won this winter. Another match will take place next Saturday. The following is the score: J. W. Mann 3,3,4,0,3--13; Jacob E. Jacobson 3,5,4,3,3--18; George Wilson 4,5,5,4,4--22; Albert J. Allen 2,4,4,4,3--17; George C. Allen 2,4,3,4,3--16; Alvin W. McBride 4,4,4,4,4--20; David Benson 2,3,3,4,2--14; David B. Allen 3,4,5,4,3--19; Andrew C. Anderson 4,5,4,4,4--21; Iver C. Nielsen 3,5,4,4,2--18; John G. Wilson 5,5,3,2,4--19; Oliver J. McBride 3,4,4,3,4--18; C. M. Goldsberry 3,4,5,3,4--19. A VISIT TO WELLSVILLE SUNDAY SCHO0L - On Sunday morning last I accompanied Elder I. C. Thoreson and C. R. Olsen, home missionaries, to Wellsville. We visited the Sunday School under the able management of Bro. [Brother] Robert Latham and an excellent staff of teachers. The exercises consisted of class recitations, interspersed with sweet music and song. It is not too much to say that there is no better conducted Sunday School in the county. We were well paid for our visit and in our opinion those who have charge of such schools could glean many good ideas with regard to their work, in visiting the Wellsville Sunday School. ELDER'S QUORUM - A very large assembly of the Elders and others met in the Hyrum Public Hall on Monday evening last. Elder Samuel Holt addressed the meeting in the interest of the Cache Valley Agricultural Association. Bro. [Brother] Holt gave an interesting discourse on the subject of farming, horse and cattle raising, &c. Uncle Sammy is a splendid judge of horse flesh and the good points in beef and dairy stock, as well as being a good farmer. There were also present Elders Elijah Tames, Lloyd Price, and John W. Richmond of Paradise. President H. P. Hansen has a fine body of men to preside over. They number about 170 Elders. PROFANITY - Three young men last week interviewed Justice Charles C. Shaw in the Hyrum Police Court. They all pleaded guilty to the charge of profaning the name of the deity. His honor, in consideration of this being their first appearance in court, fined each of them only $7.50 including costs. This is also why their names are withheld, as their appearance in the LEADER is more terrible than dollars and dimes. - G. G. S. |
