Show SUNDAY SCHOOL RECREATION. Last Sunday will long be remembered by the Sunday school of the First and Fourth wards. In the afternoon a grand picnic was held in the basement of the Tabernacle, and the children with their teachers and the officers of the school, partook of a bountiful feast and enjoyed themselves hugely. The tables used at the late fair were ranged around the room, covered with table clothes [cloths], dishes and food, and about 500 children ate their fill of the good things provided. After the feast the food remaining was loaded into a couple of sleighs and distributed among the poor. Some of the latter made touching demonstrations at the kindness. During the afternoon a "fish pond" and other sports were indulged in by the juveniles. In the evening a large audience assembled in the same apartment to witness the rendition of a program of songs, recitations, &c. With one or two exceptions all the pieces on the program were well rendered, and some of them were surprisingly so. Those deserving special mention were the opening piece "Moonlight on the Lake" by the Logan choir; glees "Serenade" and "In Silent ??" by the Logan Glee Club; song and chorus "Toll, Toll the Bell" by Miss Emma Smith and others; song and chorus "Neath the Maple", Jos. [Joseph] Morrell and others; duet "Mill May" by Miss Ellen and Mr. Fred. Lundberg; recitation "The Polish Boy" by Miss Chloe Pratt, very effectively rendered; song and chorus "Forgive Me Love" by Mrs. Jane Villett and others, one of the gems of the occasion; and a recitation "Charley Machree" by Miss Ida Thatcher. This was a beautiful and finished rendition of a difficult piece, and strongly recalled the manner and elocution of Miss Hamill. A neat sum was netted for the benefit of the Sunday school and the audience were highly pleased with the efforts of those who took part in the program. Great credit is due the officers and teachers for the pains, time and labor they have devoted to the preparation of the entertainment. |
