Show NOMINATIONS FOR CITY OFFICERS. On Monday [unreadable line] from each three delegates to a municipal nominating convention were chosen. The convention met in the city hall last Wednesday evening. James A. Leishman, Esq. [Esquire], was made chairman, J. E. Cowley, secretary and W. W. Maughan, assistant secretary. The chairman read a telegram from Mayor Wm. [William] B. Preston, announcing his wish not to run for the office again, and expressing the desire that the convention would act perfectly free in selecting a man for the position. Mr. Aaron Farr, Jr., moved the appointment of a committee of five to prepare a ticket. A debate followed, a number of delegates being in favor of having the nominations made by the house. Mr. Farr then moved an amendment to his first motion, requiring the committee to name two men for each position, so that the convention would have a choice from two. This motion was carried, but it seems to have had very little effect upon the conduct of the convention. The chair appointed the committee, which consisted of a delegate from each ward, and they retired. After an absence of about an hour they returned. The ticket they had prepared was headed with the names of J. A. Leishman and Aaron Farr, Jr., for Mayor. On the first ballot R. S. Campbell, who was not nominated by the committee at all, received eight votes. The voting was by ballot. On a subsequent ballot, Mr. Campbell received a majority of the votes of the convention and was declared the candidate for Mayor. The names on the ticket, as given below, were all presented by the nominating committee, except that of Fred Turner, Councilor from the 5th Ward, who on a third ballot received a majority of votes, four candidates having been named. A free and rather jolly spirit prevailed during the convention, and nearly every delegate took part in the debating and speech making, and each voted for the man of his choice with absolute freedom. The ticket finally nominated unanimously by the convention is as follows: MAYOR: Robert S. Campbell. ALDERMEN: 1st Ward, James A. Leishman; 2d Ward, Chas. [Charles] W. Nibley; 3d Ward, W. E. Partington; 4th Ward, C. B. Robbins; 5th Ward, Henry Flamm. COUNCILORS: 1st Ward, Willard W. Maughan; 2d Ward, C. J. Larsen; 3d Ward, James Quayle; 4th Ward, Thomas X. Smith; 5th Ward, Fred Turner. MARSHAL: Alvin Crockett. RECORDER: William A. Bassett. TREASURER: George Hymers. ASSESSOR and COLLECTOR: George T. Benson. |
