Show SCRIMMAGE AT EAGLE ROCK. Editor Leader.-As we are beginning to think of celebrating Christmas here, I thought I would give you ?? ?? as to how it is being introduced among us. The pay car came up here on the 22d, and the rail road employes [employees] were paid up. Some of them were discharged the day previous, and were in [unreadable] for a good spree, and they were not at all slow to avail themselves of the opportunity. Several of them became quite drunk before noon, and to finish up the day's enjoyment two painters, one of whom was among those discharged, got into trouble in one of the saloons, which terminated in a fight. One of them received a good beating, and called quits. The other, who was rather opposed to being ?? in anything of the kind, after whipping his man, walked down the street closely followed by his opponent. The latter drew a pocket-knife and tried very hard to use it on his chastiser, who, on the other hand, was equally as anxious to avoid his blows, and would no doubt have done so had not a third party stepped in and held him, try and make peace, when he received a cut in the right shoulder. He then tore himself loose, picked up some cobbles and commenced returning the charge [unreadable] unsuccessful attempts to strike his man a fair blow with [unreadable] he made a few passes as if intending to throw, and thus threw his man off his guard, and when he did let the rock go it came in contact with his assailant's cranium, just behind his right ear, causing him to fall in an ungraceful manner on the ground, and at the same time inflicting a gash from which the blood flowed freely, he, however, got up and renewed the attack, but was prevented from further action by parties interfering. I expect we will have a fine time when Christmas comes for there is some talk of a shooting match for turkeys. Yours truly Dutchy, Eagle Rock, Dec. 23d, 1881. |
