Show I PROVO CHORUS I SINGS WELL BUT I LOSESJE PRIZE ,1 Denver Wins the First Prize in M the Chorus Contest With Salt Lake a Close Second Trained Singers. K While the Provo Eisteddfod H chorus did nut win the first prize the' did the city much good aud (H exhibited to the people of the state Wm that 1'rovo has beautiful singers. H Denver won the choral contest H fur the Fourth National Eisteddfod which was held in Salt Lake last H night. Salt Lake came a close 'H Eccond and while the adjudicator yH did not state whether Ogden or Provo won third place. The dis-H dis-H cussion of the singing giveu out by H Dr. Daniel Protherope would have fl " aPi)eur l'iat Ogden had a little H the best of the contest for third hH place. To the ordinary person who heard the choruses it would prob-H prob-H ably uj)pear differently. 'jH A record breaking crowd listen- ed to the singing and whon the H Pruvo chorus took their places they H received great appluuse. Their H singing was well received and being H the tirpi iv nog in the content they H won a wurni spot iu the hearts of the people. A noticeable feature MM of the elioruucs, Provo hud the B youngest singers. Both Denver uiid.tialt-LU!o;lladi6id uud'traiued H singers which made- considerable H ditlercuce when placed before an audieuce such as greeted them last H evening. It was ulso noticeable H that the singers did not give Prof. JH Luud the uttention which was tlls-H tlls-H ila)exl by the other singers, possi 9M bly due to the strangeness of the H sieue before therm jH The chorus did good work and H considering that they were pitted H against some of the best singers in H the west, it 1ms been a good ex per H ience for the singers. The follow Mm iug is the discussion given out by jM Adjudicator Dr. Protherope: H ''Sylvia" A choir of good voices Hj but the balancing parts not so good, Hj as the altos were far too prominent, HJ and they had a tendency to use too H much of the chest voice, making the tone a little coarse. The sopranos Hj were of pleasing quality, flB were H the male Voices. The tempo was H correct and fair care was taken in Hj tlm attention to detail expression. H The pjrt nng ng was fuirly clear) H but more dtlitujy and lightness H t'Hild have been displayed. The H (1 ging o ndd have bten more i It iste H niiil fiulehed in style. There were Mne breaks in the rhj thru which H we could not udmito. At the hot-H hot-H totn of page 0 aud also at the close H of the first line In page D the end-H end-H lg was not effective. The pitch waB H not maintained. "The Challenge of The" Good tempo, but altos again too promi- lent. The forte on the word ''tlitmderer" made like u tnezio f'Jrteand tlm tone increased. To H ttriko the forte at onto would ha tita us a better effect. The tempo H tn the rieoluto was a little slow and H when the theme "this is my ham- tuer" was given the singing dragged little. Thero was One toue, how- ever, by the male Voices. The at- tacks were given with splendid pre- cision, but the tonal quality was marred by the continued open tones of the altos. The 0 sharp of tho teuors, third bar, page U, was out of tunc. The tonal body was a lit-A lit-A hj indistinct at the bottom of page B 3. There was a thrilling effect on i word ''earthquake." The moto maestoso was taken at too rapid a not contrasting and ruakluj; the part singing a little blUrfed. The unison, "ThoU art a God, too," very effective. The tone Was pure and the last page was well sting. Sunday evening at theTabcrnrcle tho people of Salt Lake ahd the state will have the privilege of hearing hear-ing the Provo Tabernacle choir under un-der the direction of Prof, lloshard.
