Mlch.-After an absence of a month, during which ho had long been given up as a dead bird, a large bronze turkey gobbler belonging to Charles Mead, who lives west of town, nroudly strutted into the yard with his tall spread Into a fan with a young turkey at his sldo. Tho young bird had Just been hatched and followed !.-. ..o;lr pyarywhorn. The mystorlous reappearance of the cobbler was explained after Investlga-lion Investlga-lion by his astonished owner. It was discovered thnt tho bird had drlvon Mrs Turkey from the nest after she had laid the first egg, and that he had determined to raise n family himself by Bitting on tho egg tt full month, leaving tho nest once In a while to get some food. Tho nest vyns under some hickory grub which grew beside tho highway. There was evidently some kind of domestic trouble in tho Turkey family. for Mrs, Turkey went away by herself, and two weokB after the gobbler had appeared in tho barnynrd with 11 youngsters following her. The turkeys have not yet begun to fratornlzo. The gobbler Is a year old and weighs 25 pounds. Though gobblers have been known to take their turn at keeping keep-ing the eggs warm, it is seldom that one over takes the responsibility of hatching out the family himself. |
