Show The Special Session By L. A. liollenbeck Last winter the regular session of the legislature wanted more pie money to spend, and they eoudln't spend it because the constitution prevented them from collecting more than they were now collecting from the people over the state, and hence, they passed a resolution creating a tax committee and a tax revision commission to hold sessions during the "summer and fall, and hired Harley Lutz( a professor of Princeton University to come to Utah on a big salary to tell the committee and the commission and the legislature how to do the tiling. It is quite apparent that the real motive that inspired this move was to spend more money, but it Is under the outward progaganda that the desire de-sire was and is to equalize taxation and not to increase it. But, the scheme is to create a tax commission for the state, and give that .commission power to meddle with individual tax assessments assess-ments all over the state, and force the assessments to what the commission thinks is the full cash value, and then to regulate the tax rates so that the spenders can have all the money they want. We all know that a tax rate al: .most always raises instead of getting lower, and we ail know too, that the more money is spent on new developments develop-ments the bigger is the demand for more money. We know, too, from experience ex-perience and history that the leglslal ture is in mind to ghe it to them. We know also, that a legislator is often influenced by official attention and recognition by the high officials of, the state, and others, and sometimes that influence is Imperceptable, and because of that, it is the most dangerous danger-ous influence, and the importance of a particular legislator Is magnified and he becomes an ardent worker for the spending propaganda. However, the legislators in tills deal probably have their eyes open. We . will see a little later. The discussions during the summer and fall, helped a little, and gave some people a chonce to analyze and see for themselves the trend of this new legislation. Some good things will be put up to the people to vote on, and coupled with a good thing will be a bad thing, expecting to swallow the bad thing for the sake of the good thing. Look out! If the writer he not mistaken- the legsilature Is preparing us a Trojan horse. The propaganda comes from tlie wrong source. It looks now like a sugar coated pill' prepared by the welfare workers, the idealists and others . demanding more money We are already overtaxed, and tlie values of our property badly damaged. Let us be vigilant, for vigilance is the road to safety. |
