Show FAILING oFUNCnd& ' ' By Albert E. 5Iayes There' Is' nothing' new ri the: world, any more' except death, and" that is the oldest thing except sin. We are interested! in-terested! in a" thing only when it falls, to function. We pay .no attention. to a timepiece, a .wonderful.' bit o mechan-. mechan-. Ism, until It stops. Then we give ft all attention. There was a time" when the telephone, telegraph, electric light and , bicycle were interesting. Now we give them no thought except, when. they fall to function. Then we tear our hair and wish to tramp- on somebody. We pay no thought to the rndio until static Intervenes and then we are frantic. There 'Is no news In a motor car so long as It keeps going. Our only Interest In It Is when it goes over a bank. So long as an airplane keeps flying we give it no thought; We watch It only in the expectation thai ft" may H fail to function. It is not news except when It crashes. A parachute is Interesting In-teresting only when it falls. We think seldom of our friends so long as they are on their dally jobs. But If they are in the. hospital or the morgue we give them omre thought than to all our other friends. We give little thought to our great men until they die, nnd then the whole world stops for a minute min-ute or two. The world is not interested interest-ed in any of us so long as we continue to function. It Is only when we fail or die that we attract attention. |
