Show f t v , I JUDGE FRED POPE CARVES SYMBOL Fred Pope, Duchesne, with the pack burro he weighted down, symbolic of the weighty problems that faced the Democrat Demo-crat administration in Utah two years ago. Fred whittled the pack saddle from a piece of wood to fit the burro, and made the saddle bags or panniers pan-niers from a piece of buckskin. Tudze PoDe said he nlannpH to present it to Gov, Calvin L. Rampton as a gift mascot, but by the time he got the saddle and the packs made, he didn't like the policies carried car-ried out by the Democrats, so he kept the mascot among his souvenirs. The burro was left at the courthouse by a member of the upper strata of the Democrat Demo-crat Party when he was out "stumping" for votes in Duchesne Duch-esne County in the fall of 1964. Fred said making the miniature mini-ature saddle was more difficult than making one to fit a saddle horse. He knows, because he used to make the saddles to fit the individual horse for the saddle stock at a large cattle ranch. He said he wouldn't use a store -bought saddle. The ones he made didn't cause saddle sores on the horse. |
