Show UINTAH BASIN RECORD, DUCHESNE UTAH FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 1938. WATCH THE BURS SET ON By C. H. Wlikinson Your second cutting alfalfa has started to put on seed burs now. It gives me a great deal of personal pleasure and satisfaction to be able to say this. Most of you who read this know that the company I represent used to pay out from 250,000 to 500,000 per year for seed grown here. During the last few years we have learned the principal causes of seed crop failures so that we could tell growers how to guard against them. Lygus or Tarnish bugs have been the principal cause of loss of crops. This season many of you have taken precautions and now have fields that are practically free from these bugs. Some of you received a blessing which you probably did not appreciate at the time. Weevil ate off the tender parts of your first cutting hay and forced yu to cut it at a season when many of the Lygus bug eggs were taken off with the hay and the young 'bugs that had hatched were left without food or shelter so that they died or moved away. practically all Consequently, the blossoming second cutting alfalfa that I have seen in the last four days Is setting on seed burs now. The short, tough stuff is farther ahead. Some of the big rank growing stuff is getting a good start. A few fields are too dry and should be irrigated. Give all of it a chance to make you a money Crop. There will be no carryover of 1937 alfalfa seed by the time the new crop is harvested. The AAA pays the fanners for planting alfalfa seed.
