Show I v 1 iQ 1 i I I II I 1 Ute Lege Legend d Of Creation Part Tart I 1 In the gInning beginning of time there were no mountains no streams no DO hunting grounds and no for for- ests In those days there thero were no nored n no nored red men roaming the plains no buffalo no antelope no deer and no other living living- beings Even was there no earth but only the blue bluesky bluesky sky and the clouds cloud and the sunshine sunshine sunshine sun sun- shine and the rain I The Manitou then dwelt only in inthe inthe inthe i the cent center r of th the sky ky where he lived hived all alone for there were no other Gods in heaven Then as now he was way ruler of r the sky and the sun and the rain The lightning lightning lightning light light- ning ning- and the thunder too were at athis athis his command and the sun shone and the rain fell at his desire But by and by he grew tired and lonely and wished for new thin things s to se see and new work to torio rio do So he took a stone and whirled It round and round until he bored boreda a hole hols through h the floor of Heaven which is the sky eky And the hole he made larger and larg larger r until he could look through it at the noth- noth beyond And he was pleas pleased ac He then took the snow and the rain and poured them through the hole With them he also pour pour- I ed cd a II great quantity of stone and dirt from the thc floor of Heaven And the snow and the rain and the dirt and the stones fell from Heaven into the nothingness And he was pleased please with his work B By and by when he had thus pour poured d for or a great many many days he looked down and saw below him hum a n great graat mountain which he had budded with the rain and the snow the dirt and the rocks And far below the mountain he could see sea a great plain which stretched away and away as Caras far Car faras faras as he could se see see for for for great was the quantity of dirt and rock which he had poured Se Seeing the mountain he was curious to know what lay beyond and what wonder the dirt and rock had worked So h hs ha made the hole bigger until he was WM able to crawl through it and then step down from the floor of the sky to the I summit of the great mountain which he had made When he had come down he found that the earth and the theston ston stones had spread o out t and formed this vast vast world But it was a world of bare Ibare rocks and dirt and he at once wished for something ng to make malte it more beautiful ul To be continued |
