Show VIEWS Duchesne Utah June 4 l 1932 32 To the Duchesne County Sch School ol District School Board Duchesne Utah Gentlemen At two different meetings of the Duchesne County Taxpayers ers ersA A Association there was a unanImous unanimous unanimous demand for a reduction of taxes an and that the school district district district dis dis- should reduce its expense account and at one meeting there was a direct attack upon the teachers' teachers salaries which of course included the salary of the county superintendent and I notice by bythe bythe bythe the tentative budget et lately issued and made up by the county superintendent superintendent superintendent super super- that his salary Is placed placed placed ed and as expense account and from his standpoint he has no inclination to accede to the demand for a reduction of salary Expressing my personal opinion I believe that the superintendents superintendent's superintendents superintendent's superintendents superintendent's super super- salary should not be beIn beIn bein In excess of and the expense expense expense ex ex- pense account should not be more than making for forthe forthe forthe the superintendent and all other I expenses should be cut and the taxes should thus be reduced to tomake tomake tomake make the expenses conform to a parity with other incomes as much muchas as possible for everybody else's income has been reduced very materially materially materially ma ma- because of the contraction contraction contraction tion of the currency and the depression depression depression de de- de- de in the United States There are different kinds of remedies advocated before congress congress congress con con- gress to restore normal times times times- some radical and some conservative conservative conserva conserva- tive but some action must I conserva-I be taken taken taken tak tak- en to help out and any action will be only experimental for the conditions are extraordinary but if no results are coming or no decided effort to remedy things in a reasonable way then it will indicate that congress has misjudged misjudged misjudged mis mis- judged the temper of the plain people of the United States But let us do our part and practice strict economy in our public and private relations that we may not distress our home people I am enclosing a copy of what Ed W. W Howes the Kansas Philosopher Philosopher Philosopher Philos Philos- opher has to say which Is plain common sense and I ask you to read it Let me urge the school board to reduce its levy materially material material- ly to conform to the ability to pay by the taxpayers You cannot cannot cannot can can- not collect unreasonable taxes because because because be be- cause the people have not the money and they cant can't get it Mr Howes Howe's letter follows The attempt of the politicians to relieve the present distress by increasing taxes and giving a small part of the taxes back to the people In distress seems to tome tome tome me plain insanity The proposed tax increases will not come from the well-to-do well or rich but from the poor the unemployed and these just able to keep out of the bread lines the new sales tax ta hits everybody Taxes everybody Taxes should of course be decreased as a relief I measure and this could be easily accomplished by reducing our enormous wasteful and unnecessary unnecessary unnecessary sary governmental expenses If the government state counties counties counties coun coun- ties cities townships and school districts would reduce expenses as much as is easily feasible the saving would certainly be one- one half and thus present taxes might be reduced one E.
