Show r LATTER-DAY SAINTS' UNIVERSITY The Latter-day Saints' University is ono of tlio monuments of the devotion of the Mormon people to learning. It Is an educational Institution of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with scientific, normal, business, busi-ness, kindergarten, domestic arts, mechanical me-chanical arts, commercial, general college, col-lege, and civil engineering courses ot study. I It was organized In November, 1880, under tho namo of the Salt Lake Acad-emy. Acad-emy. Later tho name was changed to tho Latter-day Saints' College and still later to tho Latter-day Saints' University its present tltlo. Tho nature and object of tho association asso-ciation is to maintain a university, universi-ty, with colleges, academies, schools, Institutes, museums, galleries of art, libraries, laboratories, gymnasiums, nnd all proper accessories, where instruction in-struction of tho highest grado possible to its resources shall bo given to both sexes In slcence, literature, art, mechanical me-chanical pursuits, and In tho principles princi-ples of tho Gospel as taught by tho Church of Latter-day Saints. Tho chief aim and object of the Institution shall bo to malco of its students nnd i graduates worthy citizens nnd truo followers of Jesus Christ, by fitting them for some useful pursuit, by strengthening in their minds a pure attachment at-tachment to tho Constitution of tho United Stntes and to our ropubllcan Institutions, In-stitutions, by teaching them tho lessons les-sons of purity, morality, and upright conduct, and by giving them, as far as possible, an understanding of tho plan of salvation revealed by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Nothing that is contrary to tho laws of tho land shall over bo taught In tho Institution. Prof. Wlllard Dono was Its tlrst pres-dent. pres-dent. Ho was succeeded by Prof. J. H. , Paul, who recently resigned to accept n chair In tho University of Utah. He was succeeded by Capt. Wlllard Young formerly of tho U. S. Army. Capt. Young Is a graduate of West Point and nn engineer of national reputation. Tho university has a faculty and corps of Instructors embracing fifty of the ablest mon and women in tho state, and its curriculum Is equal to tho best Institutions of its kind in tho land. It has a series of exceedingly line buildings centrally and beautifully situated. Tho ground on which they stand Is alone valued at $100,000. |
