The lumber trado is booming, so aro tho brick manufacturing concerns. The lumber people can't supply tho orders thoy havo on hand. Tho lumber lum-ber business is a big and a growing trade. Railroad Facilities. That Salt Lako City Is destined to bo tho greatest shipping and jobbing centor of tho entire lntermountaln region, re-gion, Including the states of Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, western Colorado, Novada and eastern Oregon Ore-gon is being realized by tho business men of tho city, and of tho territory indicated, as well. Salt Lake Is tho geographical trado center of an area of more than flvo hundred miles In all directions. Tho contour of tho country, tho arrangement arrange-ment of tho railroad lines, and tho development de-velopment of tho mining Industry in Utah and surrounding states make Salt Lako tho natural center toward which the trado gravitates almost without Interferanco or aid. Other systems aro building that will' mako Salt Lako a second Omaha, and that will mako this city in a business busi-ness way, a western Chicago. Among these Is tho Western Pacific, building toward tho city from San Francisco Tho Moffat road Is working 5,000 men on Its grado between Denver and Salt Lako, and In an Interview published pub-lished In a local paper a fow days ago, D. W. Moffat declared emphatically that money and men were unlimited In quantity and number, to push this road to as rapid a completion as Is physically possible. This road will reduce re-duce tho timo between Denver and Salt Lake ten hours in passenger service, and a corresponding cut will bo mado In freight service timo. As for lnterurban lines Salt Lako Is fairly well supplied and other roads aro contemplated that will place tho city in close communication with nearly all tho villages and hamlets of tho northern part of .tho state. Tho Salt Lako and Ogden road Is now electrifying its lines and extending them to Logan, touching and serving a rich area. Another, road is planned to connect Salt Lake with Provo and othor Utah county points. All of theso features point to tho value of tho geographical geo-graphical location of this city. Tho recent appalling disaster which wiped San Francisco off tho map, also destroyed a shipping center which had supplied tho Novada market with general lines. Tho result of this disaster dis-aster is felt already in local wholesalo and jobbing lines. Novada morchants aro placing orders In Salt Lako for their goods. This market is open to tho Salt Lako and Ogden wholesalers and jobbers if thoy will go nfter it. Too great a spirit of convcrsatism has possessed tho business men of Utah In tho past. This spirit Is being be-ing broken down, and tho business men aro realizing moro plainly each day that what Is worth having Is worth an effort to secure. Tho ultra-conservatism of fonner years, that has boon contented with slow gains nnd snalMIko advance, is giving way to another spirit that of nggressivo hustling. A consistent and determined effort is being mado by jobbing centers in areas less favored than Salt Lake, to seize the trade that Is being diverted toward Salt Lako, and tho business men of this city do not purposo to allow al-low that trado to bo wrested from their grasp. A Business Excursion. Tho aggressive policy of business getting hns been adopted by tho loading load-ing houses of tho city, and as a result, tho Manufacturers and Merchants association as-sociation of Utah, which comprises in Its membership virtually every Important Im-portant business house In Salt Lako and other cities, has Inaugurated n Six States Business Men's Excursion, to bo run from tho states of Novada, Colorado, Wyoming, Idnho, Montnna and Oregon, to Salt Lako during tho last week In Juno. This excursion will bo unique in tho business history of Utah. Reduced rates on nil railroad lines will bo tho first attraction to bring tho mer chants to tho city. All of tho loading manufacturing, wholesale and jobbing houses will offer discounts on all goods purchased during tho days of tho excursion, as an Inducement to purchasers. Those discounts will apply ap-ply to all out-of-town merchants who placo orders during tho period of tho excursion, for Immediate shipment, nnd tho rebates will pay tho expenses of the merchants whllo on tho trip. A finance committee, with L. R. Martineau as chairman has been appointed ap-pointed to secur at least ?3,000 to bo expended in advertising tho excursion and In entertainment of tho visitors. A programme commltteo will arrange ar-range for tho entertainment of tho guests of tho merchants. Tho entertainment enter-tainment will Include nn afternoon and evening at Saltalr Beach; an excursion ex-cursion to Lagoon, ono of tho most beautiful pleasure resorts In tho west, and othor desirable forms of amusement. amuse-ment. The merchants of tho city and stato havo taken an exceptionally livo interest in-terest In tho project, and will glvo tho Association all tho encourngoment and backing required to mako It a gigantic succcs. It is estimated that at least 10,000 visitors will bo attracted to Salt Lako by this excursion, and that a largo number of these will bo merchants who will purchaso somo part of their stock from local manufacturers, wholesalers and jobbers. Tho city will bo advertised in a manner that It has never beforo boon advortlBod, and It Is Impossible to estlmato tho good that will result from this project. Salt Lako railroad facilities and shipping facilities; hor valuo as a shipping center nnd natural distributing distrib-uting base, will bo practically and perfectly demonstrated to theso morchants, mor-chants, while they will also tasto tho unbounded hospitality of tho citizens, and will appreciate that Salt Lako Is a good city to which they may sond their trado. |
