Show The Western Weekly's Automobile Section I THE HILL-CLIMBING CONTEST. That the hill-climbing contest held last Saturday would be a success was a foregone conclusion from the time the race was announced, an-nounced, but that it would attract the vast crowd that it did and be as popular as it was amongst all classes was hardly anticipated by the most sanguine. The most popular event of the day was the free-for-all, the cup for which was presented by Mr. Samuel Newhouse. In this event the White Steamer, owned by Mr. J. F. Dunn and driven by Fred A. Dundee, was the winner, making the mile and a half in 1 minute and 40 seconds, and beating Bert Fuller's last year's record in Mr. Newhouse's Packard car by twenty seconds. The Sharnian Auto company captured the second place in this race with their four-cylinder Stoddard-Dayton car, which made the distance in 1 minute 47 1-5 seconds. The balance of the entries in this race all made remarkably good time and their owners have the satisfaction of knowing that although they did not win, they made a good showing. In the first event, for electric cars, the Fritchle, entered by the Borkman Electric company, was the winner, making the distance in 5 minutes 10 2-5 seconds, while Mr. C. A. Quiglcy's Studebakcr was second, in 5 minutes 57 seconds. The second event, for gasoline cars costing $1,000 and under, was won by the Sharman Auto company's Mitchell car, driven by Harry Elliott. The Maxwell car, the other entry for this event, made a poor showing, owing to the fact that it had a broken platinum plug and was only running on one cylinder. Event No. 3, for cars costing $1,500 or under, went to Mr. C. S. Higson's Jackson car, driven by Harry Bracken. There were no other competitors in this event, but Bracken took the car over the course in the particularly good time of 3 :07. In the race for gasoline cars costing $2,000 and under, which was the fourth event, the Jackson car again took first place in 3 minutes min-utes and 7 seconds, and the Kissel Kar second in 3 minutes 263-5 seconds. Mr. E. S. Yankee's Pope-Hartford was the winner in the fifth event. ' Time, 2 :29 3-5. The Jackson second, in 3 :38 2-5.
