Show Mines and Mining Midsummer has found the mining industry in about the same state of activity as it was a year ago. True it is that the price of copper has not been placed back again to the high figure it attained at that time: but even though the red metal is not at the 20-cent point, (here is a heavy demand, and even the producers, taught a lesson by the great slump, do not wish it to reach a point whert its use is precluded in the industries. The week has shown an active demand for the metals. Europe is calling more and more for copper and the consumption in this country is normal. The consumption of lead is again reaching its high water mark and the call for lead products other than white lead, which never fell off even during the months of depression, is getting back again to where it was last year. All this goes to show that there will be a steady demand for the products of the mines and that the industry is once more on a solid footing. The week has seen the Guggenheims safe in the saddle in handling the affairs of the American Smelting and Refining company. It was thought at one time that there might be a change in the policy of the company, consequent upon a change In the control. This means a development in the local plants and an added interest upon the part of the company in the western plants. In smelting matters generally gen-erally it can be said that there is a drawing together of the producers and the reducers, with that mutual forbearance upon the part of each which means so much for the industry as a whole. While no startling news of a mining character has been heard during the week, there have been many new ore bodies opened up, and several of the local properties have nearly reached the point in their development where the fruits of labor and capital expended i .will ripen into certainty. There is a great demand for skilled mining labor all through the mining states. Most of the big properties have again got back to their old mining forces, and this added to the many new mines which have been opened during the season, makes the labor market strong. Locally, Tintic is employing the greatest number of men in its history. Park City is nearly back again to its old standard, j while Bingham is as active as it was a year ago. Outstate points, especially in the gold camps of Nevada, there is great activity, and H from reports which arc received daily many of the properties there H are developing into producers. The week has been decidedly a good one for the miner. A I matter allied to mining, and one which will have a lasting effect on I the industry in the section of which Salt Lake is the center, is the I action taken by the mining operators in this city a few days ago I relative to the establishment of a branch of the National Mining Con- I grcss in this city. There is a possibility that the headquarters of the I congress will be removed from Denver here, and to that end funds I are under way of materializing for the building of a mining temple I in the skyscraper district. I TINTIC. I The Colorado Mining company, true to its traditions, has come I forward with a dividend of 12 cents a share. This will be disbursed I on the 25th of August. The mine is said to be in very fine shape, I and the opinion is that from now on there will be no month pass I without its dividend. I The Tintic Standard people arc pounding away at the mine and I are meeting with very encouraging results. The property is a new I one in point of development, but enough has been demonstrated to I show that a mine will be born before the season is over. All the I prospects in East Tintic arc in fine condition and this portion of the I district is the most active it has been in years. I It is said that all differences in the family of the Zuma Mining I company have been satisfactorily settled and that from now on the I management will push -development to the limit. The mine is said I to be very finely equipped and the ground well worthy of further I exploiting. A force of men was put at work on the property during I the week. I The Lower Mammoth, after an idleness of ten months, is again I on the shipping list. This action was taken during the week at a I meeting of the board of directors. Arrangements have been made I with the Knight smelter people and the ores will be reduced at that I plant. There are some great bodies of ore in the mine, most of which I can be taken directly to the smelter. I (Continued on Page 14.) m MINES AND MINING- (Contlnue'd from Page 7.) As development goes on at the Iron Blossom, everything goes to show that the Colorado vein has been tapped in the lower working?. work-ing?. Both it and the Sioux Consolidated are showing up fine. There is considerable ore in the latter mine and all indications go to show that the bodies are continuous. There is not one of the Knight mines that is idle at the present time and all are developing in a satisfactory manner. BINGHAM. This week a strike has to be recorded at the Bingham Central. The ore was encountered in a drift from the tunnel and is said to be a body of some magnitude. At the present time the value of the ore per ton cannot be given, but from samples which have been brought out the rock looks to be all right. Ohio Copper affairs are about in the same position they were in last week. There is one change, however, which will be hailed with satisfaction, and that is that the mine will be worked to its full capacity from now on. Changes in the mode of taking out and handling the ores of the Utah Copper are coming gradually. All the corners are being cut off and from the thorough manner in which things are being done, 7-cent copper is in sight. The Yampa smelter is now at its capacity and is turning out . copper bullion at a rapid rate. Work at the mine is progressing finely. PARK CITY. The tunnel at the Iowa Copper is nearing the point where its 1L ore body, which was opened a short distance from the surface, will be encountered at depth. Already a fine body of lead ore is coming in at the face of the tunnel. This is no surprise to the management, for they have been certain all along that the workings were nearing the point where the ore would be encountered. I he Daly-Judge is working to full capacity and the zinc mill is turning out a goodly quantity of spelter. All the great mines of the camp are also on the active list. The Silver King Coalition is especially espe-cially active and the returns from the mine for the present month bid fair to be nearly up to its old standard. BEAVER COUNTY. From reports that come in from the Cactus mine, that property is growing better every day. A great body of ore, running 4 per cent copper and from $3 to $4 gold, has been opened up on the 600 level, while on the 400 there has been opened a stope of ore which averages aver-ages 25 per cent copper to the ton. Manager Hanchett declares that he is sure of the mine, but that its resources are so great that he cannot venture a prediction as to what the mine will be when fully developed. One of the biggest mining deals which has been consummated in Beaver county for some time was completed during the week. Py it the Knight people and David Evans have come into control of seventy mining claims near the old Horn Silver. Mr. Evans has had his eyes on this territory since its possibilities were pointed out by Lorren Morrison some months ago. It is thought that the great Morn Silver vein passes through this ground, and surface workings go far to show that this is a fact. There has been a company formed to exploit the ground, to be known as the King David, and work on an extensive scale will be started at once. AMERICAN FORK. The canyon has never been as active in its history as it is at the present time. The Tyngs have got down to work on their new property prop-erty and are making things hum in a decided manner. The owners of the Miller are working the old Tyng lease in a systematic manner. They are equipping the mine in splendid shape. The Mountain Dell tunnel is now in 600 feet. Within 150 feet more the mineral zone will be tapped. There is some good ore coming in at the present time and it is now certain that development has been prosecuted along right lines. ALTA. Some time ago it was thought that the contact had been cut at the Mountain Lake mine. It was discovered, however, that a granite "horse" had come in. This has been overcome and from word just received from the property there is ore in the face of the tunnel. |
